Roadside Attractions

Harris Adams stands next to a wall that was built when he was a child in the 1930s to protect homes from flooding in Layton. The wall, which can be seen east of U.S. 89 and south of Adams Canyon, was a Civilian Conservation Corps project during the Great Depression.

ROADSIDE ATTRACTIONS: Rocks stop water from rolling

The waist-high wall of rocks that runs uphill on the east side of U.S. 89, just south of the Adams Canyon trailhead in Layton, isn't an example of an early pioneer fence or a trail marker for hikers.

It was actually part of a flood-control project dating back to the early 1900s, built in response to a series of floods and landslides.

"Tommy Wall said that one day he thought there was a war going on up on the mountain," recalled Harris Adams, of Layton. "He could hear what he thought were rifle shots -- bang, bang, bang."

Old bomb casing honors veterans of Vietnam War

SYRACUSE -- Larry Kerr likes to work in his garden for relaxation. His green thumb is apparent -- his beautifully manicured yard is framed by flower beds where an assortment of colorful flowers and shrubbery greet passersby. Rising out of that peaceful scene is a flagpole with an old bed frame at its base, and on another pole -- a bomb.

The display, which Kerr calls "Veterans Parkway," is a tribute to Vietnam veterans and a reminder to himself and others of the sacrifice veterans of that war made for their nation, he explained.

This old barn near Logan, owned by Evan Stevenson, features an advertisement for Dr. Pierce's tonic. Stevenson purchased the land in 2001, repaired the baqrn and touched up the advertisement which was originally painted during the Great Depression.

ROADSIDE ATTRACTIONS: Dr. Pierce's barn billboard a familiar sign for travelers

COLLEGE WARD -- Evan Stevenson can pull the flaking paint right off the letters plastered on the side of his weathered 107-year-old barn.

Just like that, "Dr. Pierce's Favorite Prescription" could peel away and vanish.

But never fear, this iconic sign won't be left to fade into obscurity. After all, quips caretaker Stevenson, "I don't believe in being hung."

Travelers and locals alike, you see, are pretty attached to this piece of barn art.

"Not only that, I love it, " Stevenson adds.

"It looks like I just missed the door by about 20 feet," said Red Dog as he posed for a portrait on a set of stairs that leads into the wall of a building in North Ogden.

ROADSIDE ATTRACTIONS: Building a stairway to ... nowhere?

NORTH OGDEN -- Call it the door to nowhere.

A house in the rear of the lot at 2089 N. 400 East has a second-story entryway. A lovely wrought-iron staircase also leads to that second story. But the stairs terminate a few feet shy of the portal, against a solid wall.

An extension ladder accesses the door instead.

The owner of the property goes by the handle Red Dog. He is a semiretired gent who is a musician/producer/engineer and an antique car restorer.

Lee Fielding stands in front of the Hooper home where his dad, Nolan Fielding, installed a mailbox 15 feet from the ground. The mailbox was placed more than 30 years ago as a joke on a sister who was a mail carrier at the time.
