Repairs close scenic roads in Farmington, Huntsville

FARMINGTON — Scenic nature drives might be hard to come by in the Top of Utah this summer.

U.S. Forest Service officials say Farmington Canyon Road will not be open until at least late fall, and Weber County officials say Old Snowbasin Road will remain closed for the immediate future.

Speaker: Utah on better quake footing than Ore.

OGDEN -- Utah is famous as earthquake country, with the Wasatch Mountains serving as an obvious natural marker for the fault line that built them hundreds of millions of years ago.

The earthquake potential of western Oregon was a much better-kept secret until the past decade or two, said Scott F. Burns, a geology professor at Portland State University.

Farmington Canyon Road still closed after May slide

FARMINGTON -- Farmington Canyon Road will not open anytime soon because of extensive repairs that are needed to stabilize the hillside, officials say.

A rock slide in May closed the road, and at that time, officials believed they could remove the slide and repair the road. They hoped to open the road in time for Memorial Day weekend.

But rain and snow brought two more rock slides, closing the road indefinitely.

An overflowing Weber River has forced the park to close. “A lot of revenue will be lost,” says Weber County Parks and Recreation Manager Jim Carter.

It's not just farming and business that will take a hit from existing and predicted flooding in the Top of Utah. The recreation and tourism industries also likely will be affected.
