Payson cowboy wins Fort Worth bareback championship

FORT WORTH -- The 116th annual Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo came to a close Saturday night, Feb. 4, 2012, by crowning one repeat and eight new champions.

Kaycee Feild, from Payson, Utah won the bareback riding championship in Fort Worth in 2010 after finishing two points behind Bobby Mote from Culver, Ore., who was the 2009 champion. This year he qualified for the final round in seventh place and had some ground to make up.

Gjermundson looks back on champion rodeo career

MARSHALL, N.D. -- If you met Brad Gjermundson on the street or in a cafi and didn't know better, you probably wouldn't guess he's a world champion.

The 52-year-old is that kind of man -- soft-spoken, a tad bit on the shy side and humble.

The fact is, Gjermundson is a four-time professional world champion saddle bronc rider who won his first professional championship at age 22.

WNFR crowns rodeo royalty for 2011

LAS VEGAS — Luke Branquinho won his third world steer wrestling championship and third Wrangler National Finals Rodeo aggregate title Saturday night, finishing sixth in the 10th and final round with a 4.7-second run.

Branquinho, from Los Alamos, Calif., entered the final round in a three-way fight for the world and aggregate crowns with Jason Miller, of Lance Creek, Wyo., and Shawn Greenfield, of Lakeview, Ore. But Miller and Greenfield broke the barrier and received 10-second penalties.

Branquinho made $234,518 this season. In women’s barrel racing, Lindsay Sears, of Nanton, Alberta, won her second world championship with $238,064 by securing the $45,865 bonus that goes to the WNFR aggregate champion.

In bullfighting, Dusty Tuckness is simply the best

LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- Dusty Tuckness did not set out to win a second consecutive Bullfighter of the Year award.

Sure, the Meeteetse resident would love to challenge Joe Baumgartner's records of being voted to 14 National Finals Rodeo appearances and four Bullfighter of the Year awards.

Rodeo: Field, Wright shine in Round 9

LAS VEGAS -- Kaycee Feild wrapped up his first bareback world championship Friday night in the National Finals Rodeo, finishing fourth in the ninth round with an 83-point ride on Hypnotic.

Feild, from Payson, has won five NFR rounds and has earned $256,236 this season. Second-place Will Lowe of Canyon, Texas, has $193,307 with one round left.

Miller secures steer wrestling round at NFR

LAS VEGAS -- Jason Miller made up ground on steer wrestling world leader Luke Branquinho by winning the eighth round of the National Finals Rodeo in 3.9 seconds Thursday night.

Miller, from Lance Creek, Wyo., is second in the season race with $161,879. Branquinho, from Los Alamos, Calif., has made $171,538, but failed to earn a check Thursday with a 6.8-second run.

At the NFR, Branquinho leads with $83,798 and Miller is next with $78,173. But Branquinho lost the NFR aggregate standings lead to Miller during round eight. Miller, with a time of 32.4 for eight rounds, pulled ahead of second-place Greenfield, at 32.6 for eight rounds, and third-place Branquinho, at 33.6 for eight.

National finals rodeo: Hannum wins big

LAS VEGAS -- Wrangler National Finals Rodeo rookie steer wrestler Olin Hannum won his first check of the week -- $17,885 -- for his 3.8-second run to win Round 7 on Wednesday in action at the Thomas & Mack Center.

Hannum, a Plain City native now living in Malad, Idaho, topped Todd Suhn by just one-tenth of a second for the victory.

Saddle bronc round goes to Wright again

LAS VEGAS -- Jesse Wright finished first in saddle bronc riding for the third consecutive round on Monday at the National Finals Rodeo.

Wright, of Milford, scored a 90 on Chugwater Blue in the fifth round. If he can win a fourth straight round on Tuesday, Wright would tie Billy Etbauer's record, set in 2005.

Wright's brother, Cody, took over first place in the world standings with $175,777 after finishing second with an 87.5 on Spring Planting.

Barrel race betting begins in Florida

GRETNA, Fla. -- After Dixie Wonder Bugs circled three barrels and crossed the finish line a half second ahead of Jack's Eliminator on Thursday, Brenda Wolfran jumped up off the metal bleachers with her ticket and headed to the betting window.

"I'm going to be rich!" said Wolfran, 63, of Kinard, with more than a hint of exaggeration. She'd put $10 down on the horse and rider Dallas Dewees. The bet paid $15. As she walked back to the bleachers, she yelled to her friends, "I can't carry it all!"

Utahn Kaycee Feild wins third straight bareback round

LAS VEGAS -- Kaycee Feild won his third straight round in bareback, scoring 90.5 points on Magic Wars on Saturday in the National Finals Rodeo.

The world standings leader, Feild joined John Edwards as the only bareback riders to sweep the first three rounds in the finals. Edwards accomplished the feat in 1969.

Pete Hawkins, 1999, was the last previous bareback rider to win three consecutive rounds.

Branquinho tops steer wrestling standings

LAS VEGAS — Luke Branquinho moved into first place in the steer wrestling world standings with a second-place finish Friday night in the second round of the National Finals Rodeo.

Trevor Knowles of Mount Vernon, Ore., who tied Jason Miller of Lance Creek, Wyo., for first in the opening round, won in 3.3 seconds. Branquinho, from Los Alamos, Calif., followed in 3.4 to push his season earnings total to $110,261. Knowles is second with $107,139, and Miller third with $105,773.

Previous Standings leader Dean Gorsuch of Gering, Neb., didn’t record a time and was unable to place among the top six for his second consecutive round. He dropped to fourth with $100,511.

National Finals Rodeo opens in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS -- Clay Tryan and Travis Graves took the top spot in the team roping world standings Thursday night, finishing second in the first round of the National Finals Rodeo with a 4.3-second run.

Header Tryan, from Billings, Mont., and heeler Graves, from Jay, Okla., have each earned $129,072 this season. They passed header Derrick Begay of Seba Dalkai, Ariz., and heeler Cesar de la Cruz of Tucson, Ariz., who stayed at $118,754 after they finished ninth in 9.7 and failed to earn checks.

Header Matt Sherwood of Pima, Ariz., and heeler Cory Petska of Marana Ariz., won the round in 4.1. They moved into third in the world standings with $105,475 for Sherwood and $116,242 for Petska.

Sheffield readies for WNFR debut

OGDEN -- Top of Utah residents watching the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas can cheer for a local woman.

Jody Sheffield, of Ogden, will make her first appearance in the Women's Professional Rodeo Association barrel race at the championship event of the rodeo, set for Dec. 1-10.

"I'm excited," the 29-year-old said. "I've been wanting to race in the NFR since I was little and watching Charmayne James run."
