Romney rep speaks at convention, but Paul rep denied equal time

SANDY — GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney got a forum at the state Republican convention Saturday, but Congressman Ron Paul did not.

Josh Romney, one of five sons of the presumptive Republican nominee, was the first speaker at the gathering at the South Towne Center, but an effort to give time to a Paul supporter failed when put to a vote of state delegates.

Brandon King, of Cache County, made a motion to speak for the Texas Republican, but when the motion went to delegates to amend the agenda to allow King four minutes to speak for the candidate, it failed.

Many factors guide our coverage of the ever-changing GOP race

Watching the race for the Republican presidential nomination reminds me of a yo-yo.

First one candidate zooms up the popularity charts, then he slips back down. Then another pops up, then slides back down.

That’s pretty much been the pattern throughout the long, drawn-out process. Doubt it? Think Rick Perry, Michelle Bachman, Newt Gingrich.

Romney wins by a whisker in Iowa

DES MOINES, Iowa — Mitt Romney eked out a minuscule 8-vote victory over Rick Santorum in Iowa's Republican presidential caucuses, the state party chairman said early Wednesday, ringing down the curtain on an improbable first act in the campaign to pick a challenger to President Barack Obama in the fall.

Appearing hours after the caucuses had ended, Matt Strawn said Romney had 30,015 votes, to 30,007 for Santorum, whose late surge carried him to a near win.

Even before his victory was announced, Romney looked past his GOP rivals and took aim at Obama. "The gap between his promises four years ago and his performance is as great as anything I've ever seen in my life," he told supporters in Iowa's capital city.

DAVENPORT, Iowa — The Iowa race remarkably fluid, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney faces a suddenly surging Rick Santorum, an unpredictable Ron Paul factor and the challenge of winning over undecided conservatives in a state that spurned him four years ago.

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa -- An Iowa victory within reach, an increasingly confident Mitt Romney on Friday cast chief GOP presidential rival Ron Paul as a fringe candidate and said: "I'm working harder than anyone to make sure he's not the nominee."

Romney, Perry slap at Paul on Iran

MUSCATINE, Iowa -- Republican presidential contenders Mitt Romney and Rick Perry on Wednesday assailed Ron Paul for saying the U.S. has no business bombing Iran to keep it from acquiring a nuclear weapon, drawing a sharp contrast with their rising rival as he returned to Iowa days before the lead-off caucuses.

Young Republicans choose Ron Paul over Romney

KEENE, N.H. -- The oldest candidate in the race for the Republican presidential nomination gets treated like a rock star by his youngest supporters.

Ron Paul, 76, was ranked third overall by voters in the latest Granite State Poll from the University of New Hampshire Survey Center, with support from 12 percent of likely Republican voters. But he came in first among GOP voters ages 18 to 34, with 32 percent of the vote, topping former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney by two percentage points.
