9-year-old reacts promptly after Roy home is ablaze

ROY — A toaster fire caused an estimated $50,000 in property damage to a Roy home early Thursday, while a scared 9-year-old girl fled the home.

Mormon Battalion to hold meeting

ROY -- Frank C. Martinez IV will be speaking at the Mormon Battalion Association meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Roy Branch of the Weber County Library.

Martinez has been an historical interpreter of Spanish Colonial history for 15 years. He speaks on Spanish and Mexican involvement in the United States history.

ROY — A car crashed into a parked school bus at 3550 West and 5500 South, about 8 a.m. Wednesday.

ROY — Roy police and the Utah Highway Patrol are investigating a potentially fatal accident that closed the Riverdale Road overpass at 1700 West Friday afternoon.

ROY — Residents can enjoy a free celebration of freedom Thursday night at Roy High School’s auditorium.

All welcome to help with Roy cleanup Saturday

ROY — The community is invited to participate from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday in a neighborhood cleanup day sponsored by Habitat for Humanity Weber and Davis Counties.

Those who wish to participate are asked to meet at 8:30 a.m. at the intersection of 5800 South and 2600 West in Roy.

The cleanup will be in the neighborhood bordered by 5600 South to the north and 6000 South to the south, the railroad tracks to the east and the trail to the west.

Those who participate will be helping with yard care projects and hauling away yard waste and other unwanted items.

Probe blames pilot for December 2010 plane crash in Roy

ROY -- The National Transportation Safety Board blames the pilot for the December 2010 plane crash that damaged several Roy homes and injured 17 people.

Hoggan receives six months in juvenile facility for Roy High bomb plot

OGDEN -- Joshua Hoggan was sentenced today to six months in a secure care juvenile facility as part of a plea agreement over his role in a plan to set off a bomb at Roy High School.

Roy plans three clean-up days

ROY -- The city is starting the first of three clean-up days Saturday.

Residents living within the city limits on the north to 4800 South and from the city limits east to west are invited to assist friends and neighbors who may need extra help, or to contact city or local religious leaders to get directions on where the biggest cleanups will be.

Roy RDA approves land swap with Weber School District

ROY — The city Redevelopment Agency has agreed to a land swap with the Weber School District that will allow for the construction of a new North Park Elementary School.

The site for the new school is at approximately 4000 S. 2175 West, just east of the school’s current location.

SALT LAKE CITY -- Lawmakers on Friday honored Roy for its 75th anniversary as a city.

Teen bomb plot suspect released to parents

OGDEN — The 16-year-old boy accused in a plot to blow up Roy High School has been released to his parents.

Police arrested Roy High students Joshua Kyler Hoggan and Dallin Morgan, 18, on Jan. 25 after two students went to authorities with concerns about text messages from Hoggan detailing plans to set off a bomb at a school assembly.

“After a hearing on Mr. Hoggan’s detention status, the court finds that it is appropriate to release him to the custody of his parents,” Utah courts spokeswoman Nancy Volmer said after a Friday hearing before 2nd District Juvenile Judge Janice Frost that was closed to the press and public.

Roy agrees to sell surplus computers

The council gave the go-ahead for the city to sell some surplus computers that have become outdated for city use.

City Councilman Willard Cragun also suggested the city make a donation or partial donation of the older computers to the city’s senior center as their computers are even more outdated.

City Manager Chris Davis said the city had also looked into letting one of the local junior high schools use the computers.
