Prep softball: Royals claim third softball title in four years

TAYLORSVILLE -- It wasn't in the bag just yet, but Roy's second consecutive state softball title was close at hand when fans began chanting "Back to back! Back to back!"

Spurring their team on, Roy's vocal supporters turned up the volume even higher as right fielder Brittnee Higgs made a diving catch to close out the Royals' 5-2 victory over Salem Hills Thursday afternoon at the Valley Complex.

Prep softball: Rowdy Royals roll into championship game

TAYLORSVILLE -- For the second straight night, the Roy High softball team refused to give up when they were down and after the dust cleared on Wednesday's 4-A semifinal match they had made the championship game for the fourth-straight year.

With Murray up 6-5 in the final inning it was junior short stop Jordynn Barrera who led off Roy's last at-bat with a double that sparked a four-run inning and lifted the Royals to a 9-6 win, keeping their undefeated tournament bid alive.

Prep softball: Barrera gets Roy into 4-A semifinal

TAYLORSVILLE -- With her team down 5-3 in the last inning of Tuesday's 4-A championship-bracket game, Jordynn Barrera stepped to the plate for Roy High knowing she had to put the ball in play and try to move the base runner the Royals had on.

Turns out it was easier for her to just hit a two-run dinger, tying the game and sending it to extra innings where the Royals scored the final run in the bottom of the eighth to advance with a 6-5 win over Region 6 champion Bountiful at the Valley Softball Complex.

Prep soccer: Royals bow out in shootout

ROY--Roy coach Glenn Puckrin stood in the shadows, his tearstained players slowly gathering their equipment behind him, and spoke of opportunities that never come again.

After 80 minutes or regularion and overtime wasn't enough to break a 2-2 deadlock, Puckrin's Royals lost in a 3-1 penalty kick shootout to Orem in the state 4-A boys soccer quarterfinals.

Prep baseball: Bees baffle Royals in play-in game

BRIGHAM CITY -- The baseball regular season is over.

From here on out, everyone has the same record and will be fighting for their playoff lives. The dreams of winning state games and that elusive state title actually began a day earlier for at least one Top of Utah team.

GARLAND -- It is always sweet to upend your crosscounty rival, but the Bees have bigger fish to catch.

Box Elder, chasing the Region 5 softball title along with Roy High, tangles with Bonneville and the defending state 5-A champion Royals next week on the road.

"I'm excited for next week. It's always fun to play Bonneville and Roy," said Bees junior right-hander Baylee Reeves. "We always have them at the end (of the season). We want to win that league title."

Prep baseball: Roy beats Bonneville to keep playoff hopes alive

ROY -- Better late than never.

That's the first thing Roy baseball coach Eric Jones said after his squad defeated Bonneville 8-6 Friday, keeping the Royals' state 4-A playoff hopes alive.

"We are in a must-win mentality right now, but win-loss records go out the window when you are playing your rival," Jones said. "It always feels good to beat those guys (Bonneville)."
