Ethiopia’s Desisa, Kenya’s Jeptoo win in Boston

BOSTON — The Kenyans finally face a challenge to their dominance of the Boston Marathon, and it’s from their East African neighbors.

Ethiopia’s Lelisa Desisa took the title in the 117th edition of the world’s oldest marathon on Monday, winning a three-way sprint down Boylston Street to finish in 2 hours, 10 minutes, 22 seconds and snap a string of three consecutive Kenyan victories.

“Here we have a relative newcomer,” said Ethiopia’s Gebregziabher Gebremariam, who finished third. “Everything changes.”

Racing helps Massachusetts father, disabled son forge bond

HOLLAND, Mass. — The year was 1992, and Dick Hoyt and his son, Rick, wanted to run and bike across the country to raise funds for a charity for cerebral palsy — a condition 30-year-old Rick developed at birth.

But the charity didn’t want anything to do with a trek across the United States.

“And, uh, so this insurance company that was going to finance us backed out with four weeks to go before — so we had to refinance our house here so we are able to pick up the expenses,” Dick Hoyt recalled recently, sitting next to his quadriplegic son at their home in the hills of western Massachusetts.

A view of post-quake Haiti, on the run

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — Six days a week, the rail-thin athlete sets off at daybreak, his neon-green running shoes glowing in the grey light of dawn.

It’s hard not to notice Astrel Clovis. He’s one of the only runners ever seen in Port-au-Prince, where there are few sidewalks, let alone bike lanes, and major thoroughfares seemed more pothole than road even before disaster struck this city three years ago.

Changes planned after Vegas marathon illness probe

LAS VEGAS — A year after hundreds of Las Vegas Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon and Half-Marathon runners reported symptoms of stomach illness, organizers on Monday promised changes that include strict sanitation rules and the hiring of a contractor to supply water to runners.

Revisions for Sunday’s event include the use of closed 125-gallon tanks with spigot hoses at water stations along the courses, officials said. Water will be trucked in, instead of drawn from fire hydrants.

With can-do stance on marathon, mayor misreads NYC

NEW YORK — Mayor Michael Bloomberg tried to sell the New York City Marathon as a symbolic victory for the city after a devastating storm, invoking two of the biggest symbols of them all — Rudy Giuliani and 9/11.

The former mayor, Bloomberg said, made the right decision by holding the marathon less than two months after the 2001 terror attacks: "It pulled people together, and we have to find some ways to express ourselves and show our solidarity with each other."

Then, he kept talking.
