Mexico violence curtailing church missions

McALLEN, Texas -- John and Wanda Casias knew the risks of being missionaries in one of Mexico's most violent, cartel-dominated regions, their children say, but they refused to curtail their work and instead put their ministry ahead of their safety.

The couple's slaying this week during a home invasion comes as missionary groups are rethinking how they prepare their volunteers to live in Mexico and other hotspots -- or whether to send them at all.

Two snowmobilers found safe Monday

OGDEN — Two snowmobilers were stranded for more than five hours before being found early Monday morning by members of Weber County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue near Wasatch Ridge.

The two men, ages 23 and 45, were reported missing around 10:30 p.m. Sunday in the Monte Cristo area, said Weber County Sheriff’s Lt. Mark Lowther.

They became stranded in the snow, built a fire to stay warm and were found without injury around 4 a.m. Monday, he said. Their names were not released.

Police get $9,000 donation for radar equipment

PLEASANT VIEW — Police Chief Scott Jackson says the day following an article in the Standard-Examiner explaining the need for new radar equipment, the Pleasant View Police Department received an anonymous donation of $9,000 to pay for three radar units.

Jackson said he is grateful to the donor and to the Standard-Examiner for running the story.

Council members recently approved the purchase of two of the five needed radar units. With the $9,000 donation, all five units will now be purchased.

SYRACUSE — An 18-year-old Syracuse man is facing charges after rolling his car while huffing air duster, a chemical used to clean electronic appliances, police say.
