FARMINGTON -- Officials from Union Pacific Railroad and the Utah Transit Authority are worried a move to vacate Red Barn Lane as a public right of way could jeopardize their access to a key point to maintain rail systems in the county.

Mexico violence curtailing church missions

McALLEN, Texas -- John and Wanda Casias knew the risks of being missionaries in one of Mexico's most violent, cartel-dominated regions, their children say, but they refused to curtail their work and instead put their ministry ahead of their safety.

The couple's slaying this week during a home invasion comes as missionary groups are rethinking how they prepare their volunteers to live in Mexico and other hotspots -- or whether to send them at all.

FARMINGTON — Upgrading the strength of the steel used in the construction of Davis County’s $16 million administrative office building should make those who work there feel more comfortable if another hurricane-force windstorm tears through Farmington.

Two snowmobilers found safe Monday

OGDEN — Two snowmobilers were stranded for more than five hours before being found early Monday morning by members of Weber County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue near Wasatch Ridge.

The two men, ages 23 and 45, were reported missing around 10:30 p.m. Sunday in the Monte Cristo area, said Weber County Sheriff’s Lt. Mark Lowther.

They became stranded in the snow, built a fire to stay warm and were found without injury around 4 a.m. Monday, he said. Their names were not released.

SALT LAKE CITY -- An inflatable vest meant to keep skiers afloat in an avalanche has taken top honors at a premiere outdoor-gear trade show in Salt Lake City.

Police get $9,000 donation for radar equipment

PLEASANT VIEW — Police Chief Scott Jackson says the day following an article in the Standard-Examiner explaining the need for new radar equipment, the Pleasant View Police Department received an anonymous donation of $9,000 to pay for three radar units.

Jackson said he is grateful to the donor and to the Standard-Examiner for running the story.

Council members recently approved the purchase of two of the five needed radar units. With the $9,000 donation, all five units will now be purchased.

Speaker: Utah on better quake footing than Ore.

OGDEN -- Utah is famous as earthquake country, with the Wasatch Mountains serving as an obvious natural marker for the fault line that built them hundreds of millions of years ago.

The earthquake potential of western Oregon was a much better-kept secret until the past decade or two, said Scott F. Burns, a geology professor at Portland State University.

Police: Syracuse man rolls car after huffing 'Duster Air' to get high

SYRACUSE — An 18-year-old Syracuse man is facing charges after rolling his car while huffing air duster, a chemical used to clean electronic appliances, police say.

At 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Spencer Steven Nicolas rolled a green 2000 Chevy Malibu at 3361 W. 700 South, said Detective Heath Rogers.

33 domestic violence-related deaths in Utah last year

SALT LAKE CITY -- A husband and wife who abused each other. A family of three in Brigham City who fell on hard times. A son who, family members say, threatened to kill his father.

Six domestic violence-related deaths occurred last year in the Top of Utah, according to the annual report from the Utah Domestic Violence Council.

Sex offenders in Utah might be able to get names off registry

A local lawmaker does not believe Utah will lose any federal funds if legislators tweak the state's sex offender registry.
