OGDEN — Several road closures are scheduled in the Ogden area during the next few days as the USA Cycling Collegiate Road National Championships take place.

From 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Ogden will close downtown streets between 25th and 27th streets from Grant to Ogden Avenue.

Construction zones dangerous for drivers, work crews

OGDEN — With more than 200 active construction zones expected this year, the Utah Department of Transportation wants motorists to watch out for the workers.

A new highway work zone study conducted by the Associated General Contractors of America revealed that 68 percent of the nation’s highway contractors had motor vehicles crash into their construction work zones during the past year.

Policies on wearing body armor vary across Top of Utah

OGDEN — Ogden patrol officers were not required to wear protective body armor vests when they responded to a fierce Jan. 4 gun battle that left one lawman dead and five others wounded.

At the time of the shootout, police department policy only required officers to purchase vests through a federal grant reimbursement program but did not state anything about wearing them, said Ogden Police Chief Mike Ashment.

The policy was changed in January after the shooting to require all uniform, crime reduction, community policing and traffic officers to wear body armor, Ashment said.

Beacon installed to ensure safety of pedestrians crossing U.S. 89 in North Salt Lake

NORTH SALT LAKE -- A HAWK in the sky is making it safer for Adelaide Elementary School students to walk to school.

At the request of the school and North Salt Lake City, the Utah Department of Transportation recently installed a new High Intensity Activated Crosswalk, or "HAWK," beacon at the intersection of U.S. 89 and 800 West in North Salt Lake.

Hill details how the F-35 will impact the Top of Utah

HILL AIR FORCE BASE — With Hill Air Force Base the top candidate for the new F-35 fighter mission, the Air Force has released a document detailing how the jet will likely impact the Top of Utah.

The Air Force released its F-35 Operational Draft Environmental Impact Statement on Friday, which examines impacts the jet will have on noise, land use, air and water quality, and safety.

In July 2010, Hill was chosen as the Air Force’s preferred alternative for the location of the first two operational squadrons of the advanced F-35 stealth fighter.

Seven-car accident sends at least 5 to hospital (video)

OGDEN — Five people injured in a seven-car accident Monday night didn’t have to wait long for medical help.

An eyewitness said an ambulance was waiting to turn just before 6 p.m. when the driver of a Hummer sped through a red light at 12th Street and Harrison Boulevard and hit three other vehicles.

PLEASANT VIEW — The city council has approved up to $500 in funding for the Weber High School alcohol- and drug-free senior party at Toad’s Fun Zone. The donation will depend on the amount left in the police department budget.

OGDEN — An Ogden woman says she’s too frightened to return home following an encounter early Friday morning with a masked gunman inside her residence.

Police Lt. Danielle Croyle confirmed Monday that the incident at the home in the 2800 block of Harrison Boulevard is being investigated as a home invasion.

ROY — Residents of a 12-unit apartment building shed many tears Monday evening as they watched their homes go up in flames.

The two-alarm blaze at the Herfordshire Apartments, 4642 S. 1900 West, was reported by Roy Police Sgt. Danny Hammon as starting at 4:14 p.m.

Woman hit by FrontRunner in Layton suffers 'fairly significant' cuts

LAYTON — A FrontRunner train hit a woman as she was crossing the tracks Friday morning at the Layton train station.

“She’s got a couple of cuts that need to be treated, but it looks like she’s going to be OK,” said Layton Police Sgt. James Petre.
