TREMONTON -- The city council has agreed to ask the mayors of Elwood and Deweyville to sign an interlocal agreement for fire protection.
Historically, Tremonton has provided fire protection for Elwood, Deweyville and residents who live in unincorporated areas of the county.
Four years ago, when Tremonton asked for an interlocal agreement to cover costs of using the city's equipment for fire protection, the communities and Box Elder County created their own fire protection district.
Fire Chief Steve Batis said that, even with the special service district, Tremonton Fire Department is still being paged for fire protection in Elwood and Deweyville.
"If we're paged, we will respond, but the question did arise, 'Why are we being paged if we are not part of the special fire district?'ââ" Batis said.
Councilman Dave Deakin said it was important to communicate to both mayors that Tremonton is neutral about whether the cities want Tremonton's services for fire protection and about whether the cities stay in the county fire district.
If the communities opt to sign an interlocal agreement with Tremonton, the mayors will need to sign an interlocal agreement that includes "hold harmless" wording.
The statement would also include an agreement for how the cost of fire protection would be paid.
Councilman Lyle Holmgren said county officials are asking if Tremonton would consider joining the fire district.
Councilman Byron Wood said, "We need to make it known that we are completely supportive of the people in the county, but we need to be treated fairly costwise."
