Police 'disrupt' suspicious package outside IRS building

SALT LAKE CITY -- Salt Lake City police say a suspicious package found outside a downtown building that houses IRS offices contained personal belongings.

Police Sgt. Robin Snyder says after a robot investigated and disrupted the package -- meaning it was essentially blown open -- investigators found it contained personal effects.

Initially Snyder described the big black package as "very suspicious." She says a passer-by noticed that it was unattended and called police Tuesday afternoon.

The whole building was evacuated as well as the street in front of it.

It was unclear how much of the multistory building is occupied by the IRS.
