Retail sales rises for sixth straight month

WASHINGTON — Americans spent more on autos, furniture and clothing at the start of the crucial holiday shopping season, boosting retail sales for a sixth straight month.

A number of Georgia retailers are starting to ring up alcohol sales on Sundays, less than two weeks after voters endorsed the change at the polls. County public surplus property sale may yield Father's Day gifts

Wal-Mart fights declining U.S. sales

NEW YORK -- Seeking to reverse seven straight quarters of same-store-sales declines at its U.S. namesake chain, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. said Monday that it's expanding the number of items on its shelves, launching TV advertising and working with its suppliers to lower costs.

The retail giant, which was hurt by a previous strategy to narrow its product assortment, said it's adding about 8,500 items, or 11 percent, to an average store.

Fishing supplies, crafts and fabric are among items being added back to store shelves, Walmart U.S. Chief Merchandising Officer Duncan Mac Naughton told reporters, adding that the company is tailoring some merchandise to local demand, such as selling ice-fishing tools in markets like Minnesota.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas -- When the Avon lady comes calling, sometimes his name is Bob.

Corpus Christi, Texas, resident Bob Bettiga is darn proud to sell Avon. "Bob the Avon Guy," as he's marketed himself, has won several corporate awards to prove it.

A top salesman, he recently was named the oldest male company representative and is one of about three men selling Avon in the Corpus Christi area, he says.
