Salt Lake Community College falls in NJCAA softball championship

ST. GEORGE -- Chattanooga State Community College did the unimaginable, coming through the consolation bracket and defeating Salt Lake Community College twice to capture the NJCAA Division I Softball National Championship on Saturday at Dixie State College.

SLCC could not figure out tournament MVP and outstanding pitcher of the tournament, Ashley Czechner. Czechner went all seven innings, only giving up one run on four hits and struck out seven. She had a 3.31 ERA in the tournament going 5-1, throwing 322âÑ3 innings and struck out 37 batters.

Regents approve 5 percent tuition increase for Weber State

SALT LAKE CITY — The State Board of Regents on Friday approved Weber State University’s request for a 5 percent increase in tuition, along with increases for the eight other public, state-funded colleges and universities.

Increases take effect summer term, which for Weber State begins in late May.

“Higher education saw a budget increase from the Legislature this year for the first time since 2008,” said Bill Sederburg, Utah Commissioner of Higher Education. “Fortunately, the Legislature made support for higher education a priority this year, but in order to hold funding per student constant, we still need to make up for lack of funding in previous years.”

WSU team advances to national Ethics Bowl championship

OGDEN -- A team of Weber State students has taken top regional honors in a "bowl game" of a different sort.

The WSU team won the 11th annual Wasatch Regional Ethics Bowl Competition and will advance to the national championship March 1 in Cincinnati.

Loretta Aleamoni Walker Williams

Loretta Aleamoni Walker Williams, born May 8, 1940, in Salt Lake City, died Wednesday, June 22, 2011, following a heart attack while vacationing in Salt Lake City. Robert Q. Eilers, 45, died Monday, April 18, 2011, from pancreatic cancer. Robb chose to be cremated and will have a private celebration of his life announced to friends later. Tuition increases approved for public universities and colleges

SALT LAKE CITY -- Utah's Board of Regents has approved tuition increases averaging 7.5 percent for the state's eight public colleges and universities.
