Utah man pleads not guilty in Ponzi scheme case

Last Edit: Dec 15 2009 - 11:55am

SALT LAKE CITY -- A Utah man accused of running a multimillion dollar Ponzi scheme and using some of the money to acquire classic and luxury cars has pleaded not guilty to additional charges of solicitation to commit a crime of violence, tampering with a witness and retaliating against a witness.

Jeffrey Lane Mowen appeared in federal court Monday.

An indictment alleges the 47-year-old Mowen solicited or tried to persuade a fellow jail inmate to attempt to kill four witnesses in the case to keep them from testifying at trial.

Mowen, of Lindon, pleaded not guilty in May to three counts of wire fraud. He's accused of defrauding investors of more than $18 million in the alleged scheme.

He was arrested in Panama in April a few days after his indictment was unsealed.

A trial is set for Jan. 11.
