The Utah Department of Commerce is warning residents about a new scam involving Walmart gift cards.
Officials said residents have reported receiving phone calls from operators claiming the recipient is a random winner of a $400 gift card.
The catch is, they are asked for their credit card company name and their account information "to cover a small shipping fee."
Officials said this scam sounds real because, to try to validate the pitch, the operator gives the potential victim a real Walmart gift card customer service phone number.
Division investigators found the scam artist was calling from a prepaid cell phone that could not be called back, so if the customer didn't go along with the offer, the scam artist could move on to the next person.
Consumers are reminded to not give out any personal account information, Social Security numbers or other identifying information to strangers.
Also, the Division recommends that consumers not send any money through a wire transfer service unless the recipient is a trusted and known source.
