Gullo: Promoter deserves jail time for scam

OGDEN -- Local philanthropist John Gullo has asked Ogden police to investigate a music promoter he contends owes him $11,250 over musical performances at Ogden's recent Hot Rock'n 4th celebration.

Gullo, who is trustee of the American Dream Foundation, said Jason Taylor, of Orem-based Double Play Entertainment, was supposed to reimburse him for payments Gullo made to country music performers Josh Gracin and the Bellamy Brothers.

Gullo wants to see Taylor prosecuted for giving him a check that bounced.

Disaster survivors urged to beware of recovery scams

WASHINGTON -- The U.S. Small Business Administration is urging disaster victims seeking federal aid to be alert to scam artists posing as federal officials and to be cautious about any solicitations for fees to perform services that are available from federal agency staff for free.

In the wake of widespread flooding, wildfires and tornados in many areas across the country over the past few months, the SBA is particularly concerned about flyers that have appeared in tornado-damaged areas asking for non-refundable fees of up to $450 to help disaster victims fill out their loan applications and as much as $1,000 to verify losses and file loan applications.

Bad checks tip off scams in Clearfield

CLEARFIELD -- The Clearfield Police Department is seeking information about a pair of recent scams in the community.

City police recently responded to a local check-cashing business to investigate two separate incidents involving people cashing fraudulent checks, said Sgt. Kyle Jeffries.

"When police arrived, they quickly realized that they were dealing with the same old scams in new forms," he said.

Gift card offer is latest scam

The Utah Department of Commerce is warning residents about a new scam involving Walmart gift cards.

Officials said residents have reported receiving phone calls from operators claiming the recipient is a random winner of a $400 gift card.

Police look into possible scam

OGDEN -- The Ogden Police Department is investigating whether a grocery service is legitimate.

A woman who lives on Adams Avenue reported that she received a flier advertising a service that would purchase and deliver groceries for her, Lt. Eric Young said. The service requests the person's debit, credit or other financial card information.
