Student wins Ford Motors scholarship

SYRACUSE — A Syracuse High School senior has been awarded a $1,000 scholarship by Ed Kenley Ford of Layton and the Ford Motor Company as part of the ongoing FFA scholarship program.

Basketball fundraiser for scholarship in name of drowned hero

PLEASANT VIEW — The family of a man who drowned last year while saving his sister is holding a basketball memorial tournament to raise funds for a scholarship in his name.

Students receive $3,000 scholarship based on service

OGDEN — Nine high school seniors and one current Weber State University student are learning the value of service.

The Rotary Club of Ogden presented each of the students with a $3,000 scholarship.

Fundraiser aims to set basketball record

CLEARFIELD -- The Fallen Heroes Scholarship Foundation, a nonprofit organization, and Clearfield Aquatic Center have teamed up to raise money and potentially set a world record in the process.

On Dec. 26 through Dec. 30, at the aquatic center gym, a record attempt for the longest continuous basketball game will be staged. The game is set to begin around 9 a.m. Monday, Dec. 26 and conclude around 10 p.m. Friday, Dec. 30.

Bees set up scholarship to honor fallen friend

BRIGHAM CITY -- Box Elder High School is offering the Laney Lynn Peacock Scholarship, and the Bees are dedicating Wednesday's non-league volleyball match versus crosscounty rival Bear River in Peacock's honor.

Peacock died Aug. 13 after a rock-climbing accident with a friend in Willard Canyon.

Distinguished Young Woman competes for national title

FRUIT HEIGHTS -- Recognized as Utah's Distinguished Young Woman, Sarah Oldham is anything but ordinary.

The 18-year-old from Fruit Heights graduated with top honors from Davis High School this year. In addition, she received a score of 32 on the ACT test, she was the school's student body vice president, a member of the tennis and track teams and won the state 300-meter hurdle high school competition.

Power company awards scholarships

The Rocky Mountain Power Foundation has awarded Ogden-Weber Applied Technology College Foundation a grant in the amount of $3,000 to fund scholarships for students in the electrical trades, President Collette R. Mercier announced.

OGDEN -- Whitnie Dutt took the final step that her mother could not. The 13-year-old stood in at the Stevens-Henager College graduation ceremony Thursday night to accept her mother's diploma.

WSU student creates scholarship to honor his late mother

OGDEN -- Douglas Mullikin could find plenty of ways to spend a spare $500. There's always rent and food to pay for, and Weber State University tuition, fees and books.

Mullikin works two jobs at WSU, where he is a freshman studying business economics. After the 22-year-old finishes his shift at Wildcat Lanes, in Weber State's Shepherd Union, he starts his nightly janitorial job in the same building.

Davis teen earns Jedediah Morgan Grant scholarship

KAYSVILLE — Every year, hundreds of high school students receive scholarships to help them further their education.

This year, Brooke Stockett of Davis High School, is the first recipient of the Jedediah Morgan Grant scholarship for the performing arts.

The $1,000 scholarship was awarded to Brooke during an assembly at the school by Wayne Muir and Virginia Adams Winegar, both of whom are also Davis High School graduates.

LAYTON -- Paige Schidlack, a Syracuse High School senior, has been awarded a $1,000 scholarship by Ed Kenley Ford and Ford Motor Company.

CHS JROTC team places in national cyber defense competition

CLEARFIELD -- A third-place finish in a national competition netted five Clearfield High School students a cool grand in scholarship money.

After four rounds of competition and nearly five months of preparation, members of the Clearfield High Junior ROTC team placed third overall in the finals of CyberPatriot III, the nation's largest high school cyber defense competition.

U of U student named as Harry S. Truman scholar

SALT LAKE CITY -- Secretary Madeleine K. Albright, President of the Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation, announced University of Utah’s Brandon Peart as one of 60 students selected from 264 U.S. colleges and universities as a 2011 Truman Scholar. 

 

The University of Utah’s Hinckley Institute of Politics is one of only three institutions nationwide to produce a scholar in each of the last five consecutive years.
