5 students receive $1,000 scholarships from Tanner Clinic

LAYTON — Tanner Clinic has awarded five $1,000 scholarships to high school seniors pursuing a career in health care.

The recipients are Lynette Randall, of Clearfield High; Kaitlyn Brough, of Davis High; Xavier Stilson, of Layton High; Dallas Clark, of Northridge High; and Taylour Crawford, of Syracuse High.

Top of Utah students honored

SALT LAKE CITY -- Fifteen high school seniors from Utah who have demonstrated strong character and a determination to succeed in life have been named Daniels Scholars and will receive funding to attend the college or university of their choice.

The announcement was made last week by Linda Childears, president and CEO of the Daniels Fund.

Local winners included: Maria Jose Chevesich of Bonneville High School; and, Lynnzie Donna Leavitt of Woods Cross High School.

To identify candidates for the scholarship, the Daniels Fund partners with high schools, youth serving agencies and college prep providers that nominate candidates for the Daniels Scholarship. After being nominated, candidates take part in an interview and selection process in the communities in which they live.

Students receive $3,000 scholarship based on service

OGDEN — Nine high school seniors and one current Weber State University student are learning the value of service.

The Rotary Club of Ogden presented each of the students with a $3,000 scholarship.

Two Davis district students earn perfect ACT score

FARMINGTON — In the last year, nearly 3,000 students in Davis School District took the ACT, a standards-based test used to assess college readiness.

Two of those students — Helena Ma, a junior at Davis High School in Kaysville, and Landon Willey, a senior at Viewmont High School in Bountiful — achieved a score of 36, the highest score possible.

The Utah ACT State Organization Council honored the two students at a luncheon in Sandy this week.

Once-bankrupt business makes good on donations to schools

OGDEN -- Business students at Utah State University and the University of Utah will have more help when they look for careers or seek money for college.

FJ Management, formerly known as Flying J, is donating a total of $3.5 million to business schools at the two universities.

The company made the announcement Monday morning at the Flying J Museum in Ogden, with company officials, university representatives and students on hand to celebrate the occasion.

Buzzer starts on 108-hour basketball game

CLEARFIELD -- It was still early Monday, just two hours into what's expected to be a game of at least 108 hours, and players moved across the court easily, smiling as they made baskets, bringing the score to a lopsided 104-36.

The goal of the event is twofold: Break a world record with 108 hours of continuous basketball playing and raise money for a good cause.

Basketball players ready to break record, raise scholarship funds

CLEARFIELD -- They'll need a special scoreboard for this basketball game, one that will count points into the thousands.

To raise money for the Fallen Heroes Scholarship Foundation while also breaking a world record, two teams will tip off Monday morning in the gym of the Clearfield Aquatic Center and play until Friday night.

Mexican Consulate helps fund scholarships

SALT LAKE CITY -- The Mexican Consulate has presented grants to several schools and organizations to provide educational scholarships.

The Institute for Mexicans Abroad provided the $80,760 in grants to help students of Mexican citizenship or children whose parents were born in Mexico through the Mexican Government Scholarships Program known as BECAS IME.

Fallen Heroes Scholarship Fund seeks place to try for world record

CLEARFIELD -- City officials are considering use of a gymnasium to help support a scholarship and potentially set a world record.

Kurt Spencer, of the Fallen Heroes Scholarship Fund, approached staff asking for use of one basketball court at the Aquatic Center from Dec. 26 to Dec. 30. The plan is to start a basketball game at 8 a.m. Monday, Dec. 26, and end at 10 p.m. Friday, Dec. 30.

Roy students earn Brown scholarship

ROY — Two Roy High School graduates have been chosen as recipients of the sixth annual “Heart of a Champion: Kyle Brown Memorial Scholarship.”

The scholarship recognizes student-athletes who excel in the classroom as well as on the playing field, but more importantly whose character and friendship inspire those around them.

7 Top of Utah students awarded Horatio Alger scholarships

WASHINGTON - The Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans has announced that seven Top of Utah students were among 26 in Utah to be awarded scholarships.
