School personnel under investigation are still being paid

LAYTON — Investigations by Davis School District continue into Layton High School Principal Paul Smith and its choral director, Joseph K. Everton, both of whom remain on paid administrative leave.

The Davis district has not revealed why Smith, of Kaysville, was placed on paid leave Oct. 12.

“An investigation is ongoing in the district,” said district spokesman Chris Williams.

â€œA conclusion has not been reached.”

He said a probe by the school district has yet to determine whether Everton had an inappropriate relationship with a student.

Everton, of Layton, was married to Maria Henzi, 18, on Sept. 25, just months after her graduation from Layton High School in June.

Henzi was 17 when she graduated and had been one of Everton’s students.

She turned 18 in July.

A police investigation of Everton’s relationship with Henzi found no criminal behavior on the teacher’s part.

The investigation concluded in October.
