Helicopters locate suicidal man

OGDEN -- The helicopters flying over the east side of Ogden on Wednesday afternoon were searching for a wounded man.

A 38-year-old man hiked up the trails at Ogden Canyon and hurt himself in a suicide attempt, said Weber County Sheriff's Lt. Mark Lowther. But shortly after 3 p.m., he had second thoughts and called 911, Lowther said.

Emergency responders lost the connection with him, but an Air Med helicopter spotted him on the mountainside above 22nd Street.

"But because of the area he was in and the condition he was in, we brought in Life Flight because they have a hoist," Lowther said. "We couldn't have found him without (the air support)."

He was cold and weak when emergency responders found him, but was conscious and talking, Lowther said. About two and a half hours after the man's initial call, he was flown to McKay-Dee Hospital. His condition was unknown as of Wednesday evening.

Police found a knife he may have used to hurt himself, Lowther said.
