OGDEN -- Redistricting Top of Utah's Republican-held state Senate seats divides Ogden among three senators, a move one Ogden official praises for giving Ogden more power in the Legislature.

Tooele says it's fast-growing but forgotten in redistricting

SALT LAKE CITY -- Residents of one of Utah's fastest-growing counties expressed frustration Monday about an election boundary that could leave them without a state senator.

The Redistricting Committee approved a map of state Senate districts that splits Tooele County into two districts with incumbents from other counties, despite repeated pleas from residents and former legislators to draw a district wholly contained within the county.

Tooele is the seventh- largest county in the state and the third-fastest-growing in the state, with a 43-percent growth between 2000 and 2010.

Utah lawmakers looking at state senate boundaries

SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Redistricting Committee is reviewing final proposals for new state Senate and school board boundaries.

Chaffetz town hall meeting today

OGDEN -- U.S. Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, will hold a town hall meeting at 7 p.m. today at the Pleasant Valley Branch of the Weber County Library, 5568 Adams Ave., in Washington Terrace.

The meeting will be in the library's black box theater.

Chaffetz, who represents the state's 3rd Congressional District, is holding a series of such meetings around the state. He is widely considered to be a potential challenger to Sen. Orrin Hatch for the Republican U.S. senatorial nomination in 2012.

Chaffetz ready to launch campaign tour around Utah

SALT LAKE CITY — U.S. Rep. Jason Chaffetz hasn’t decided whether he’ll seek the Senate seat of fellow Utah Republican Orrin Hatch, but his movements in the upcoming week indicate he’s seriously considering it.

WASHINGTON — The Senate emphatically passed emergency legislation Tuesday to avoid a first-ever government default, rushing the legislation to President Barack Obama for his signature just hours before the deadline. The vote was 74-26.

Hatch, Bishop push amendment to empower states

WASHINGTON D.C. -- U.S. Sen. Orrin Hatch and Rep. Rob Bishop said Thursday they are co-sponsoring an amendment to the Constitution that would allow states to repeal laws and regulations implemented by the federal government.

The amendment has to be approved by two-thirds of both houses of Congress and ratified by three-fourths of the states to become law.

The amendment reads: "Any provision of law or regulation of the United States may be repealed by the several states, and such repeal shall be effective when the legislatures of two-thirds of the several states approve resolutions for this purpose that particularly describe the same provision or provisions of law or regulation to be repealed."

Gov. Herbert signs bills in Kaysville

KAYSVILLE — During a quick business trip to Kaysville City Hall, Gov. Gary Herbert turned nine bills into law, while at the same recognizing a group of Davis lawmakers responsible for the legislation.

Bill transfers land to Mantua

WASHINGTON - Utah Republican Sen. Mike Lee and Rep. Rob Bishop have introduced legislation to transfer three parcels of federally owned land in Box Elder County to the town of Mantua.

Specifically, The Box Elder Utah Land Conveyance Act would convey nearly 32 acres of land that could be used by the community for multiple purposes, including the potential development of a new city cemetery, a new town hall, fire station, park or elementary school.

Senate bans teen drivers from using cell phones

SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Senate has passed a ban on cell phones use by drivers younger than 18 years old.

Utah Senate considering immigrant driving cards

SALT LAKE CITY -- A Senate bill repealing Utah's driving privilege cards used by thousands of illegal immigrants could be replaced by a measure to keep the cards but require background checks.

Republican Sen. Curt Bramble of Provo says the driving privilege cards protect Utah drivers because they allow a driver to get auto insurance.

He says most of the 40,000 people who use the cards are illegal immigrants.

Bramble says he plans to substitute a bill this week repealing the cards with one requiring background checks, photos and fingerprints for anyone getting the card.

Republican Sen. Steve Urquhart of St. George is the repeal sponsor. He says in a blog post he opposes the cards, even with stricter rules, because they attract illegal immigrants.

Urquhart says only four states offer the cards.

Utah Senate advances Medicaid pilot program bill

SALT LAKE CITY — Utah lawmakers have tentatively approved a proposal to require a small number of Medicaid recipients to do community service in exchange for coverage as part of a pilot program.
