US Senate confirms Matheson seat on circuit court

SALT LAKE CITY — The U.S. Senate has confirmed the nomination of Scott M. Matheson Jr. to a seat on the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals.

The Deseret News reports Matheson was confirmed on Wednesday. He was nominated to the post in March by President Barack Obama.

A University of Utah law professor, Matheson is the son of Utah's two-term Democratic governor Scott Matheson Sr. and a former U.S. attorney for Utah. His brother, Jim Matheson, is Utah's lone Democratic member of Congress.

Matheson will replace 10th Circuit Judge Michael W. McConnell who retired in August 2009.

The Denver court handles appeals of cases from Utah, Colorado, Oklahoma, Kansas, New Mexico and Wyoming.
