Francine Giani talks on speakerphone with a scammer while her father, Sal Giani, 88, listens Tuesday in Centerville. Sal Giani received a call that his grandson was in jail and needed to be bailed out by having money sent to the Dominican Republic. While waiting for the man, who said he’d call back to see if he’d wired the funds, Giani called his daughter, who is the executive director of the Utah Department of Commerce. She says her nephew was actually fine and at work, and warns that the “grandson scam” is making a comeback. (NICK SHORT/Standard-Examiner)

Phone scammer calls wrong number in Centerville

CENTERVILLE — One phone call to his daughter saved Sal Giani from losing $1,800 to a con artist.

His daughter, Francine Giani, executive director of the Department of Commerce, was on hand Tuesday to talk to a man claiming to be a bail bondsman for her nephew.

“The grandson scam is coming out again, and we want our seniors and their families not to become victims,” said Francine Giani.

Single senior missionary from Kaysville grows to love Africa

All missionaries in The Church of Latter-day Saints serve with a companion. Couple missionaries serve together, while the young elders and sisters serve with companions they haven’t met.

The same is true for single adult missionaries who go as senior missionaries to help spread the Gospel. Sister Ruth Naylor is one of the single senior missionaries who left her Kaysville home to serve in the Africa Southeast Area office.

Bathing beauties don Easter bonnets for watery parade

OGDEN — It wasn’t a usual water aerobics morning at the Marshall White Center on Monday.

Instead, a parade broke out — an Easter bonnet parade.

Several senior citizens took to the water wearing their bathing suits and fancy Easter bonnets in celebration of the holiday this week. The Easter bonnet parade and competition has become something of a tradition; it’s now in its fourth year.

Advanced age doesn't have to hold you back from new employment

For the first time in our nation’s history, older adults are now the fastest-growing segment of our population. Every day, 10,000 Baby Boomers turn 65.

Unfortunately, one in every five people 65 and older lives on an average of $7,500 a year. Social Security recipients will only see a very slight cost-of-living adjustment in those benefits in 2013.

Shredding event in Bountiful helps prevent ID theft

BOUNTIFUL — Despite the loud noise coming from the shredder as piles of paper were tipped into it, seniors remained undeterred by the commotion, standing close enough to witness their personal documents being destroyed.

“I can’t afford a shredder,” said Bountiful resident Winanne Brady, who brought confidential papers in plastic grocery bags, as well as several compact discs and address labels.

The community shred held Friday in the parking lot of the Golden Years Activity Center was sponsored by Davis County Senior Services, the Utah State Health Insurance Assistance Program and the Senior Medicare Patrol.

Rocky Mountain Care Foundation assists seniors, disabled

BOUNTIFUL — A leaky faucet, a swamp cooler that needs to be hooked up, or a railing that needs fixing; those may seem like simple household chores, but to a senior citizen the task can seem daunting.

To help seniors continue living independently, the Rocky Mountain Care Foundation based out of Bountiful has begun a new community outreach volunteer program called Do Unto Others (DUO) to provide senior citizens or those living with disabilities in Davis County with minor home repairs and seasonal yard maintenance.

The small non-profit organization already helps with home care and hospice services, but has decided to expand their offerings so seniors can be as independent as possible in their homes. They started the groundwork for putting the program together last fall.
