More than vehicles, oil refineries pollute Utah's air; new website offers info

Utahns can now learn what — other than cars — causes the winter pollution that so concerns the Division of Air Quality.

Snowblowers, domestic animals, farm machinery, graphic art chemicals and deep-frying equipment also add to the pollutants in the air, according to a DAQ report released Monday.

Roy celebrates 75 years by saving time in a capsule

ROY — Appreciating the past and looking to the future is how residents and city officials celebrated the city’s 75th anniversary Saturday.

The city held a special ceremony and put together a time capsule with more than 20 items representing Roy. The capsule will be opened in 25 years at the city’s centennial celebration.

IRS warns of scam involving fraudulent refunds on returns

OGDEN — The Internal Revenue Service is warning taxpayers about a new scam that tries to trick people into claiming fraudulent refunds on their tax returns.

The scam artists promise refunds to people who normally aren’t required to file for taxes because they have little or no income, which means senior citizens tend to be the targets, according to a news release from the IRS.

'Seniorhood,' forgive the pun, is a 'gray area'

Just when you're beginning to come to terms with the idea that you might be considered middle-aged, you turn 50 and receive a "welcome" letter from AARP.

"Oh, puhleez," you think, tossing it into the recycling bin. Nevertheless, the seed has been planted.

When does "seniorhood" begin, anyway? And who says so?

"It's becoming a gray area, excuse the pun," said demographer William Frey, of the University of Michigan Population Studies Center.

Senior citizens in Layton help first-graders build reading skills

LAYTON — First-graders need all the practice they can get reading aloud to adults, says the reading coach at Knowlton Elementary.

Residents at Apple Village Assisted Living in Layton have the time and willingness to sit and listen to students read, she added.

Scammers try to bilk Harrison Regent residents in Ogden

OGDEN -- At least five residents of Harrison Regent, an independent senior living community, received phone calls Wednesday from scammers claiming to represent the U.S. Social Security Administration.

Davis Chamber of Commerce honors Fruit Heights woman who returns the favor

FRUIT HEIGHTS -- Life changed dramatically for Shelley Nettesheim when her husband died in a car accident and she became a widow at 24.

The Fruit Heights woman wanted to finish her education for the sake of her two young children. She put herself through school and earned a marketing degree from the University of Utah.

Volunteer Janet “Nan” Lujan, 73, helps students arrive safely at Sunset Elementary School on Thursday. She walks several blocks each school day to help students cross 250 West in front of the school and keeps them out of the parking lot as parents and staff pull in. She returns at the end of the day to help the 400 students get home without incident. “She is our guardian angel,” says Assistant Principal Amber Sundown. “Every school should have someone just like her.” (MATTHEW ARDEN HATFIELD/Standard-Examiner)
