LAYTON - For the third year Northern Utah Chapter of the American Red Cross held a Youth Leadership Conference "A Day of Service" for High School students from Weber and Davis Counties.
Sixty Five students participated in the "Make it a Day On, Not a Day Off" at Davis Campus of Weber State University in Layton in memory of Dr. Martin Luther King. The full day conference was organized by Sally Carter and Judy Loper. The event is an effort by a Red Cross grant to get students involved in community support activities.
The students participated in first aid training, classes on awareness of African cultures through music, dance, and ceremony mask building. They also raised funds for the African Measles Inoculation Program where every dollar collected gets one child in Africa a preventive measles shot. This effort will help reduce the over 36,000 deaths to children annually due to this terrible disease.
The students also packed fifteen cases of fruits and vegetables for hand out by Catholic Charities of Ogden. Members from America Corps Volunteers assisted the Red Cross in the days' activities.
