SALT LAKE CITY -- Daniel Patino, a Layton resident and a four-year member of Boys & Girls Clubs of Weber-Davis, was named the 2011 Youth of the Year for the state of Utah by Boys & Girls Clubs of America.
Gov. Gary Herbert made the announcement in an awards ceremony Thursday at the state Capitol.
Patino and six other candidates from across the state were judged on academic success, service to their club and community, and character and leadership skills.
Patino is a senior at Layton High School and is an active participant in Keystone Club (a teen leadership club at the Boys & Girls Club), Upward Bound and his school's debate team and high school band. He has already been accepted into Weber State University, where he plans to major in musical engineering.
Patino also received a $1,000 scholarship from Tupperware, and this summer, he will compete against other youths from states in BGCA's Pacific Region.
Each of the six other candidates will receive a $500 scholarship provided by the Utah Alliance of Boys & Girls Clubs.
