TX: Teen’s Guide to Sewing

(From front) Louise Kelley, Sallie A. Tibbs and Hellen Lee lay out hats, scarves and gloves on a table at the Salvation Army in Ogden on Tuesday. The winter wear was crocheted and knitted by women at the Golden Hours Senior Center in Ogden. (KERA WILLIAMS/Standard-Examiner)

OGDEN -- Salvation Army volunteers and staff members were busy organizing fundraising and preparing to provide Christmas for needy families when some of Santa's helpers walked through the chapel doors.

Hat-making great-grandpa heals through helping

CLINTON -- If you thought weaving yarn was women's work, you probably never met Paul Bergeron. The man has a passion for making winter hats that has extended to the creation of at least 700 of the floppy tops.

Be an external fixator -- help soldiers fight one more battle

I've gotten so many "I remember that cute red-headed kid" notes from readers I figure half the town knows that Seth Pack is the soldier horribly wounded in Afghanistan I've been writing about. Now Seth, the son of a friend, has told me I can tell the other half.

Miracle-Gro product helps gardens grow

Miracle-Gro's Expand 'n Gro planting mix takes some of the heavy lifting out of planting container gardens.

Expand 'n Gro is a blend of plant food and coconut coir, so it's lighter than traditional potting soil. It's also concentrated, so the compact package is easier to carry and store.

The planting mix expands as much as three times its size when mixed with water.

"I get to say I made it," Michelle McGinn, of Marriotts Ridge High School in Howard County, MD., says of her custom-made prom dress. "They (her classmates) can't go out and make the same thing I did."

The Phoenix: A prom dress like no other

BALTIMORE -- Michelle McGinn took three weeks to complete her gold-and-fire-red dress -- aptly named "The Phoenix."

Briana Angel found her dress at a bridal shop only to dismantle it and piece it back together to reflect her personal flair.

Sarah Lewis designed her prom dress and recruited the owner of a local fashion house to produce the elaborate frock.

Years ago, many teens would have scoffed at the thought of wearing a homemade dress instead of flaunting a stylish store-bought number.

(ANTHONY SOUFFLE/Standard-Examiner) Sister Maria Nguyen (bottom, center) laughs as she and student Stephanie Wade (left) and volunteers Maricela Romero and Maria Mendez attend a graduation ceremony for the Give Me a Chance program Wednesday in Ogden. The Give Me a Chance program teaches sewing and business skills to low-income women.

Low-income program in Ogden celebrates first year

OGDEN -- When nine women showed off their creations Wednesday, it was apparent that their efforts had created in them a new sense of self.

The women all expressed deep gratitude as they graduated from a free 10-week sewing course at Give Me a Chance.

PlungeMax keeps toilet running free

PlungeMax is a plunger that never touches the water, which means you won't, either.

The device is a high-volume bellows that rests on the toilet rim. When it's compressed by the toilet seat, it generates a blast of air to clear the clog.

The volume of air is 25 times what a standard plunger produces, the company says.

When not in use, it folds for storage behind the toilet tank or in any other convenient spot.

The device won an honorable mention in Handy magazine's 2010 Innovation Awards.
