OGDEN -- An Ogden man is suspected of sexually abusing a 7-year-old girl his live-in girlfriend was asked to baby-sit on two occasions.
Officers arrested Raymond Leon Dement, 47, on Wednesday at his home on the 3000 block of Brinker Avenue after police received a tip he was possibly preparing to leave the area as he received word police and prosecutors were planning to screen formal charges in the case.
Dement was booked into Weber County Jail on two counts of aggravated sexual abuse of a child, both first-degree felonies.
The incidents occurred in November when the mother left her four children in the care of a female friend. During the stay, the friend reportedly asked Dement to watch two of the four children while she left the home with the other two.
Police say that's when Dement singled out one of the girls and forced her to take off her clothes in front of her sister, also of elementary school age.
Dement reportedly removed his clothes and laid up against the girl. A similar incident occurred the next day, also in the presence of the sister, said Lt. Scott Conley.
Police recently launched an investigation into the allegations and questioned Dement and his girlfriend.
"We didn't learn of the incident until April 1," Conley said. "Both girls had been placed into foster care and they confided in their foster mother. She contacted us and she alerted Child Protective Services."
Conley said the children had recently been taken out of their biological mother's custody for reasons unrelated to this case.
Police are still unsure why Dement singled out one of the girls and did not abuse the other. They planned to screen charges against Dement in this case on another date, but they arrested him on Wednesday to keep him from fleeing.
