Brigham City man charged with sex abuse

BRIGHAM CITY -- A Brigham City man has been charged with six counts of aggravated sexual abuse of a child following an investigation by the Weber County Sheriff's Office.

Joel Bell, 25, is scheduled to be arraigned Monday in 1st District Court on six first-degree felony charges.

Weber County Sheriff's Capt. Klint Anderson said Bell was arrested Wednesday evening and booked into Box Elder County Jail.

Anderson said the Weber County Sheriff's Department was notified by a volunteer group that monitors the Internet for possible child sexual abuse that a case was possibly going on in the Top of Utah.

"They gave it to us, and one of our detectives who is affiliated with Internet Crimes Against Children task force, tracked it down to this guy, and ... did a lot of the initial work," Anderson said.

"He contacted the Brigham City police, who then said, 'We'd rather you handle it,' so we did most of the investigation, but Box Elder is prosecuting."

Officials at the Box Elder County Attorney's Office were not available Thursday to discuss the case.

A Box Elder County Jail official said Thursday that Bell remained in custody in lieu of $120,000 bail.
