Former governor's office staffer from Bountiful pleads guilty to child sex abuse

FARMINGTON -- A former staff member of the governor's office pleaded guilty to one count of attempted sodomy on a child and one count of aggravated sexual abuse of a child.

Stephen John Coleman, 40, of Bountiful, entered the guilty pleas to the two first-degree felony charges Tuesday in 2nd District Court.

He was originally charged with eight counts: three counts of sodomy on a child and five counts of aggravated sexual abuse of a child, all first-degree felonies.

Since his arrest in March at the Capitol, Coleman has been held in Davis County Jail in lieu of $500,000 bail.

Coleman was arrested by Bountiful police after a girl younger than 12 reported the abuse to an adult. Police said there were two victims, both younger than 12.

Coleman had been on the governor's staff since 2009 and had worked as a budget analyst in the Governor's Office of Planning and Budget.
