Chocolate shoes tasteful gift for Valentine's Day

DALLAS — Florists and chocolate-makers are working around the clock in the run-up to Valentine’s Day.

In Dallas, chocolatier Andrea Pedraza, who loves designer high heels, molded her pedestrian passion into chocolate form. Her most well-known creations are chocolate pumps done in the style of Christian Louboutin shoes.

Prices for the pumps range from $30 to $55, but more if you fill the heel with more chocolates.

Pedraza says men buy the chocolate pumps the most, so she keeps extras on hand for last-minute shoppers.

OGDEN — The 18th Annual Warm the Soles of Kids program from America First Credit Union is fundraising with the goal of providing new shoes for hundreds more children than last year.

Public rises to shoe world's tallest man

ROCHESTER, Minn. -- Igor Vovkovinskiy, the tallest man in America, just wanted a pair of shoes that didn't cause him crippling pain.

The modern-day giant was astounded that the cost of making shoes for a man with no existing shoe size was about $16,000. So he posted a plea on Facebook last month.

HOW TO: Go shopping for the proper shoes

Whatever type of shoe you're buying, they can affect the health of your feet -- and far more.

"If your shoes aren't absorbing shock well, then your feet will, and then your knees, hips and back," says Dr. Jacqueline Sutera, a podiatric medicine and surgery specialist in New York City. Some tips:

Consider the activity. Running and walking shoes are designed for forward motion, while tennis, basketball and cross-training types are meant to move from side to side.

New Ogden playground is made out of recycled Nikes

OGDEN -- The Hershey Company and Nike put their best foot forward Thursday, unveiling an interactive playtop at the 4th Street Ball Park Complex, the first in North America made from about 4,000 recycled sneakers.

The 35-foot-by-19-foot playtop at 502 Wall Ave. is valued around $50,000.

Last year, Hershey's Track & Field Games Program teamed up with Nike's Reuse-A-Shoe program to collect worn-out athletic shoes at meets in the U.S. and Canada, Jim George, Hershey's vice president of corporate social responsibility, said during Thursday's dedication ceremony.

Whitney Morris, 28, keeps his collection of Nike shoes in his bedroom in Baltimore, Md.

Guy's home a shrine to Nike Dunk SBs

BALTIMORE -- At first glance, Whitney Morris' second-floor walk-up resembles most bachelor pads. An office has been converted into a "man cave" filled with a keyboard, a couple of guitars and a computer. The kitchen looks virtually untouched. It isn't until you walk into his bedroom that you realize Morris has a serious addiction to shoes -- Nike Dunk SBs to be exact.

"One hundred sixty-something (pairs) the last time I checked," the 28-year-old Baltimore resident said. "It's absurd."
