Officials release name of person of interest in parks ranger shooting

MOAB — The Grand County Sheriff’s Office has identified Lance Leeroy Arellano as a person of interest in the shooting of a Utah park ranger around the Poison Spider Mesa Trail of Dead Horse State Park.Arellano is described as 6 feet, 1 inch tall, weighing 165 pounds, with long black hair and hazel eyes. Officials report that Arellano is believed to be armed and dangerous and may be seeking medical attention.

The sheriff’s office said Arellano has a criminal history including assault, possession of a controlled substance, drug paraphernalia and theft charges.

His last known address was in Sanpete County, but he previously lived in Salt Lake City.

About 167 law enforcement officers from local, state and federal agencies are patrolling the area after Utah State Parks Ranger Brody Young, 34, of Moab, was shot three times Friday night while on patrol.
