Officers take needy children Christmas shopping

RIVERDALE -- It's not just Christmas Eve when Santa Claus has to work around the clock.

That was pretty evident Saturday when the jolly man made a 6 a.m. appearance, touching down in a helicopter in the parking lot of the Riverdale Walmart.

Counterfeit bills passed more during holiday season

ORLANDO, Fla. -- As the holidays approach, shoppers and merchants alike can expect crowded parking lots, long checkout lines, and frayed tempers. One thing most people aren't expecting to run across is counterfeit currency.

But according to the U.S. Secret Service, counterfeiting cases tend to rise around the holidays. And the increase may be even more pronounced this year amid the down economy.

Shoppers: Black Thursday/Friday even pleasant

RIVERDALE -- The entrepreneurial spirit was alive and well Thursday night, well before the traditional start of Black Friday.

Those who were some of the first in line at the Riverdale Target store just after they ate their Thanksgiving meal reported that the wait was pleasant and their shopping experience enjoyable.

Black Friday: Discovering kindness amid the chaos

If there's one thing I've never been shy about, it's getting a good deal when shopping.

My friends have often heard me say how my favorite jacket cost me 99 cents. Hearing myself, I've realized that, when I get a deal, I value

that item even more than if I'd paid full price.

FARMINGTON -- For weeks, Kennedy and McKinley Kissel have been asking their parents to take them ice skating. The sisters finally got their wish Friday.

Station Park celebrated Black Friday by opening its new pink ice-skating rink right in front of the Cinemark theaters.

The rink, which will be open at least through February, adds a festive feeling to the new outdoor shopping development, said Craig Trottier, vice president of development for CenterCal Properties.

Earlier deals, longer hours woo Friday shoppers

A few violent incidents broke out across the country on Black Friday as millions of shoppers rushed into stores that opened their doors hours earlier than usual on the most anticipated shopping day of the year.

Do malls get in the Christmas spirit too early?

LAYTON -- The trick-or-treaters had barely left the Layton Hills Mall when mall employees began decorating for Christmas.

"As soon as we closed the doors on Monday night and opened the doors Tuesday morning, we started setting up the Christmas decorations," said Galen Spencer, mall general manager.

Candle chain opens Newgate Mall store

OGDEN -- The national chain store Yankee Candle has opened a store in the Newgate Mall, the third of four stores it plans this year for Utah.

Manager Laura Fleck said the store opened at the first of October across from the entrance to Dillard's. The store sells scented candles and accessories. The corporate-owned stores will be open year-round and employ up to 10 part-time workers and two full-timers in Ogden, Fleck said.

Higher prices: the big trend for back-to-school

NEW YORK -- Stores are trying everything they can think of to disguise the fact that you're going to pay more for clothes this fall.

Some are using less fabric and calling it the new look. Others are adding cheap stitching and trumpeting it as a redesign. And the buttons on that blouse? Chances are you're not going to think it's worth paying several dollars more for the shirt just to have them.

Outlet malls are growing bigger, more popular

COMMERCE, Calif. -- At Citadel Outlets, the sounds of jackhammering and the whir of electric drills are as common these days as a can't-miss deal.

The City of Commerce shopping center has been in expansion mode, building a wing last fall that brought 36 stores and an additional 152,000 square feet to the mall. Construction workers are currently putting the finishing touches on half a dozen more stores, including Coach Factory Store and Not Your Daughter's Jeans, and getting ready to build another wing that is slated to open by the holiday season next year.

At a time when the rest of the retail landscape is still in recovery mode, a rising star has emerged: the outlet mall.
