With students' help, teacher collects a million pop tabs (video)

WASHINGTON TERRACE — T.H. Bell Junior High School science teacher Al Ladeau is always talking about numbers.

About 13 years ago, Ladeau — looking to offer his students some perspective on numbers, specifically large ones — got the idea of collecting a million things.

He chose to collect soda pop tabs.

Ladeau recently reached his goal — his one-millionth soda pop tab.

College, where you learn to really think about what you do

Like all teachers on the college level, Adrienne Gillespie is both dismayed by and thrilled with her students. Thrilled because some are wonders: Bright. Aggressive. Able to leap tall concepts with a single mental bound. They know why they need an education. They mean to get one.

These are the students whose papers get graded last. Why? Every professor needs a treat.

She’s dismayed because some students are ticket punchers, people who “just say, ‘Give me my degree. I just need a degree. Why do you want me to take these other classes?’ ”

Shriner hospitals to hold screening clinic

OGDEN — Children with bone, muscle or joint problems are invited to participate in a Shriners Hospitals for Children screening clinic to evaluate services for which they may qualify.

OGDEN — A Hooper woman pleaded guilty Monday to stealing more than $5,000 from a charity softball tournament intended to raise money for Primary Children’s Medical Center.

OGDEN -- For the past three years, Joseph Jones has taken his son to Shriners Hospitals for Children to correct the boy's club feet.
