Summit Group's purchase of Powder Mountain finalized

EDEN — Summit announced Tuesday it has completed the purchase of Powder Mountain, a sprawling resort often referred to as having the most skiable acreage in the United States.

“We couldn’t think of a better home for the Summit organization and community than Powder Mountain,” Elliott Bisnow, founder and chief executive officer of Summit, said in a prepared statement.

With more than 7,000 acres, Powder Mountain is the largest ski mountain in the United States, he said.

EDEN — The soon-to-be owner of Powder Mountain only wants to change the world.

And at the same time, keep the rustic ski resort’s “cool and funky” feel.

“We’d like to maintain that vibe,” said Thayer Walker, the “chief reconnaissance officer” of the Summit Group, which will later this month finalize its $40 million purchase of Powder Mountain.

BRIGHTON -- Authorities have identified a 26-year-old snowboarder who died after he apparently crashed into a tree at Brighton Ski Resort.

Weber County to back $22.5M bond to improve Powder Mountain

OGDEN — Infrastructure development will proceed on Powder Mountain with support from the county.

On Tuesday, the Weber County Commission agreed to back a $22.5 million bond for Summit Mountain Holding Group, with the approval of a memorandum of understanding to create a special assessment district.

The special assessment district will levy taxes within a 1,570-acre development to build a water well, holding tank, sewer system and roads on Powder Mountain.

No obvious signs of foul play on body found on Mount Ogden, official says

OGDEN — A male body was found by Snowbasin Ski Patrol near the antenna towers at the top of Mount Ogden.

Helicopters from Air-Med and Utah Department of Public Service were used Tuesday to assist Weber County Sheriff’s Office mountain rescue personnel recover the body, said Weber County Sheriff’s Lt. Mark Lowther.

At this time, the identity of the body and the cause of death are unknown.

OGDEN — A body of man has been found by Snowbasin Ski Patrol near the antenna towers at the top of Mt. Ogden Peak in Weber County.

Wolf Mountain offers prize for guessing depth of snow mound

EDEN — The freezing temperatures of recent weeks have provided ideal snowmaking conditions for local ski resorts, and one of them has put that opportunity to use in a unique way.

Visitors to Wolf Mountain this weekend will be greeted by a large mound of snow between the lodge and the main lift — the result of a single snowmaking machine operating for 78 consecutive hours.
