It's time to hit the local ski slopes

Looking for a fun way to burn some of those excess Thanksgiving calories? The Ogden area's three ski resorts have got you covered.

Powder Mountain kicked off the 2011-12 ski and snowboard season Tuesday with the opening of its Sundown lift for night skiing. Its two neighbors to the west, Snowbasin and Wolf Mountain, will open portions of their slopes for day use on Thursday and Friday, respectively.

In keeping with tradition, Snowbasin has chosen Thanksgiving Day for its opener. The Little Cat and Needles Gondola lifts will begin running at 9 a.m., with several groomed runs in the beginner-to-intermediate range.

Utahns warned: Avalanche danger high

SALT LAKE CITY -- Early-season snow has created prime avalanche conditions in many parts of the West, with one death already reported and another skier injured over the weekend in Utah.

At least 18 human-triggered slides have been recorded in Utah this month, according to the Utah Avalanche Center. In Colorado, 50 slides already have been reported this season, and officials estimated the actual number could be 10 times higher.

The white zone is for snow play: When skiing isn’t enough

PARK CITY, Utah — The Porter clan, 14 strong, were assembled at Park City Ski Resort for the last ski run of the family’s annual winter reunion. But Nick, 14, and Andrew, 12, oldest of the cousins, had other ideas.

Proposed gondola would connect Canyons, Solitude ski resorts

PARK CITY -  Utah’s congressional delegation introduced legislation Thursday to sell a corridor of national forest land for a gondola that would connect a Park City ski resort with another nearby resort.

Utah resorts still capitalizing on Olympic success

SALT LAKE CITY -- Before the buildup for the Olympics 10 years ago, Snowbasin in Utah was little more than a mom-and-pop operation, with aging lifts and amenities and offices in a single-wide trailer.

Now even its bathrooms are turning heads, with the Italian marble day lodge restrooms recently voted top five in the U.S.

Plenty has changed since the 2002 Winter Games put Utah's ski industry on the map.

The state's 14 resorts have undergone roughly a billion dollars in improvements, from high-speed lifts and bubble chairs to the construction of high-end global hotels such as the Montage Deer Valley and Waldorf Astoria Park City.

Unified Police say 38-year-old Pierre of Big Sky, Mont., was killed while snowboarding near Gad Valley on Sunday, Nov. 13, 2011. Police spokesman Lt. Justin Hoyal says there is no avalanche control on the mountain because the resort has not yet opened for the winter season. (AP Photo/Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort, Brent Benson)

Pro skier dead after Utah avalanche

SALT LAKE CITY -- A world record-holding professional skier who once famously jumped off a 255-foot cliff jump died in a weekend avalanche in Utah while on a steep slope at a closed resort.

Jamie Pierre, 38, was swept over a cliff Sunday at Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort in the Wasatch mountains about 30 miles southeast of Salt Lake City.

Pierre was snowboarding one of Snowbird's steepest slopes with a friend when he was sent cart-wheeling over a cliff after he triggered the late afternoon slide, the Utah Avalanche Center reported.

It was the season's first avalanche fatality in the U.S., authorities said.

Solitude, Brighton open for skiing, boarding

SALT LAKE CITY -- Utah's ski and snowboard season officially starts with the opening of Solitude Mountain and Brighton resorts in Big Cottonwood Canyon.

U.S. Ski Team partners with Copper for training run

COPPER MOUNTAIN, Colo. -- Just two weeks before its scheduled opening, the winding downhill course remains mostly covered in mud with hints of scrub brush poking through the only traces of snow in sight.

In years past, it would have taken a blizzard for this slope to have a shot at being skiable anytime soon.

Only, this isn't any year and this isn't any trail.

The U.S. Ski Team has invested millions to partner with Copper Mountain and launch its own training run at the resort from Nov. 1 to Dec. 10. There are 87 automated snowmaking guns on standby, prepared to work around the clock to blanket the nearly two-mile course and guarantee Olympic gold medalists such as Lindsey Vonn, Julia Mancuso, Bode Miller and Ted Ligety an early base of solid snow under their skis.

Utah Gov. to host travel promotion event in Canada

SALT LAKE CITY -- The Utah Office of Tourism will promote the state's national parks, ski resorts, and other attractions at a gathering for travel trade representatives in Calgary during Gov. Gary R. Herbert's trade mission to Alberta, Canada.

"Canada is Utah's largest international tourism market and we're looking forward to sharing what's new in the industry with travel trade industry leaders in Alberta as we work to increase visitation from that country," said Herbert.

SLC officials worried about proposed ski lifts

SALT LAKE CITY -- A proposal to link two Utah ski resorts with a series of ski lifts that cross the spine of the Wasatch Mountains has drawn criticism from environmental groups and Salt Lake City officials concerned about the impacts on the watershed.

Survey: Utah ski resorts earn high marks

The most widely recognized survey of North America's top ski resorts is out, and once again, Utah resorts are featured prominently on the list.

For the fifth consecutive year, readers of SKI Magazine named Deer Valley the No. 1 overall ski resort in North America for the upcoming season. Deer Valley has finished in the top three in each of the past 11 surveys, getting high marks for everything from dining options to ski instruction to snow quality.

Several Utah resorts made SKI's Top 20 survey, which is based on feedback from more than 20,000 of the magazine's readers. In addition to Deer Valley at the top, Park City Mountain Resort placed sixth overall, while its neighbor The Canyons was ranked 16th and Snowbird 20th.

Down-on-its-luck Wyoming ski area up for sale

JACKSON, Wyo. -- Plenty of Jackson locals enjoy having Snow King Resort just a few blocks from where they work so they can make a couple quick ski runs over their lunch breaks.

Such loyalty and ample snow over the past couple winters haven't kept ski operations at the resort from losing between $500,000 and $1 million a year. Now, after a nonprofit community group tried but failed to step in and run Snow King, the 72-year-old resort is up for sale.
