Heavy snowfall likely to impact Monday morning commute

Heavy snowfall across the Top of Utah sent motorists skidding Sunday evening, briefly closing Sardine Canyon and dropping almost 4 inches of snow on Layton in an hour.

The National Weather Service was projecting as much as 8 inches of snowfall through the night, likely continuing to impact the Monday morning commute.

Heavy snowfall causes havoc on roads

It was a busy day for police agencies in the Top of Utah Friday, as the continuing snow storm contributed to slide-offs and other accidents.

As of 8:30 p.m., Friday, the Utah Highway Patrol had responded to eight vehicle slideoffs or crashes in Box Elder County, 42 in Weber County and 80 in Davis County.

The Davis County Sheriff’s Office handled 123 vehicle accidents and slideoffs, while the Weber County Consolidated Dispatch Center handled 161 such incidents in Weber and Morgan counties through 9:30 p.m.

McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden urges sledders to walk the area beforehand, checking for trees and rocks hidden by snow, and watching for fences, poles and other things that could cause injury if hit. Those heading into the backcountry should pack a beacon, probes, shovels, tarps, ample water, rope, extra clothes, survivor sleeping bags, a lighter and a flare. (NICK SHORT/Standard-Examiner)

Take care when heading for the hills to sled, officials urge

KAYSVILLE — With this week’s snow across the Top of Utah, sledders who had to trek to the mountains last year are now finding sledding hills a little closer to home.

Alycia Sweeten, of Syracuse, was sledding with her kids this week on a hill near the stadium at Syracuse High School.

“It’s nice to get outside during the winter break,” she said. It’s the first year her 3-year-old has been sledding, given the lack of snow last year.

Every time she watches her five kids sled, she is amazed they still don’t have any broken bones.

Top of Utah slide-offs sure as the driven snow

Dispatchers along the Wasatch Front kept busy Wednesday as a snowstorm hit just in time for the commute.

Weber County dispatchers reported they had at least a dozen fender-benders or vehicles sliding off the road during the morning commute, with most of the accidents occurring on the auxiliary streets.

Dispatchers said there were a few more accidents as the day progressed, but no one was seriously injured.

Hundreds spend Christmas swooshing through the snow

SNOWBASIN — Jayden Massey made the trek from his Canadian home in Calgary to spend Christmas with his sister in Ogden, and figured he might as well take advantage of bluebird conditions and get a few turns in.

“The snow today is just beautiful,” said Massey, who brought his 3-year-old daughter, Cayla, along for some fun in the snow. “It’s a good day to be out.”
