LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- The days are cold and snow still lines the mountains of the Wasatch Front, but for the Weber State University softball team, things are starting to heat up.

The Wildcats kick off their third season of competition this afternoon at Eller Media Stadium when they take on Kent State at 2:30 p.m.

"We're excited to play," Weber State coach Tina Johnson said. "We haven't played on dirt or real grass, so it'll be fun to play on a softball field again."

Prep notes: Soccer title chase is under way

The state girls soccer tournaments jump into action this afternoon, with the top teams angling for an appearance later this month at Rio Tinto Stadium.

Region 1 will send four squads into the state 5-A bracket, with Davis and Fremont earning home games after tying for the league title, and Northridge and Weber facing big road battles this afternoon.

Region 2 champion Viewmont is also one of the top teams in the 5-A ranks. The Vikings reached the title game a year ago before falling to Brighton.

Region 5 champion Bonneville is one of two Top of Utah schools to bear the defending champ label -- St. Joseph is the other -- but the young Lakers appear equal to the task.

NCAA softball considers rules changes

OKLAHOMA CITY -- The NCAA is considering a change to its softball rules that would allow a defensive team to choose a penalty if a runner leaves base before the pitcher releases the ball.

The proposal would allow the defensive team to have the runner called out and replay the pitch -- as the rules currently require -- or take the result of the play if that's more advantageous.

The change is one of several proposals that will be considered by the NCAA's playing rules oversight panel on July 13.

Former coach holds final charity softball game

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The softball game is being billed as Jeff Fisher's "Final Farewell," not that the former Tennessee Titans coach is leaving Nashville anytime soon.

"Regardless of what happens in the future, I'm going to continue with my role in the community. I'm gong to keep a home here. I just wanted to continue with it," Fisher said of the game. "It's a great opportunity for No. 1 to see current players and No. 2 the former players and then of course just to benefit all the charities."

Fisher left his job with the Titans in late January after 16 full seasons as head coach in a stunning move at the time. The Titans replaced Fisher by promoting his offensive line coach, Mike Munchak.

Shortway passed his 700th career win 11 years ago but stepped up to the plate to take a swing at 800 games, hoping that age and time would not take away his pitching arm.
