Softball is not baseball

Both baseball and softball use a round ball, a bat and a glove. Both sports involve a pitcher throwing the ball to a batter with the hopes of getting him or her out. Both sports play for a certain number of innings and both sports require three outs to end the inning.

So, what’s the difference between the two?

Obviously, there are major variations between softball and baseball and the two should not be referred to as the same sport, but often enough they are — and that isn’t right. Baseball and softball may have the same concept, but there are huge variations in how the games are played. I have personal experience with this because I play on a competitive level softball team, and I see the differences in the two games.

Prep softball: Rowdy Royals roll into championship game

TAYLORSVILLE -- For the second straight night, the Roy High softball team refused to give up when they were down and after the dust cleared on Wednesday's 4-A semifinal match they had made the championship game for the fourth-straight year.

With Murray up 6-5 in the final inning it was junior short stop Jordynn Barrera who led off Roy's last at-bat with a double that sparked a four-run inning and lifted the Royals to a 9-6 win, keeping their undefeated tournament bid alive.

TAYLORSVILLE -- With her team down 5-3 in the last inning of Tuesday's 4-A championship-bracket game, Jordynn Barrera stepped to the plate for Roy High knowing she had to put the ball in play and try to move the base runner the Royals had on.

Turns out it was easier for her to just hit a two-run dinger, tying the game and sending it to extra innings where the Royals scored the final run in the bottom of the eighth to advance with a 6-5 win over Region 6 champion Bountiful at the Valley Softball Complex.
