Bears lock up fifth straight 3-A softball crown

TAYLORSVILLE -- It is best not to wake a slumbering Bear.

After getting run-ruled for the first time this season while also suffering just its second shutout, three-time defending Region 11 champion Bear River had two choices: Feel sorry for itself and engage in negativity with finger-pointing or regroup and make history.

Graduation forces game time changes for Weber

Today's Weber High graduation ceremony will be exciting for the seniors at that school, as well as their family and friends.

So will the Warriors' state 5-A soccer and softball games, which had to be pushed back to accommodate graduation.

Salt Lake Community College falls in NJCAA softball championship

ST. GEORGE -- Chattanooga State Community College did the unimaginable, coming through the consolation bracket and defeating Salt Lake Community College twice to capture the NJCAA Division I Softball National Championship on Saturday at Dixie State College.

SLCC could not figure out tournament MVP and outstanding pitcher of the tournament, Ashley Czechner. Czechner went all seven innings, only giving up one run on four hits and struck out seven. She had a 3.31 ERA in the tournament going 5-1, throwing 322âÑ3 innings and struck out 37 batters.

TAYLORSVILLE -- One more win puts Da Bears into rarefied air.

No school has swept five consecutive state softball titles. Bingham (1991-94) and Bear River (2008-11) each have won four.

Prep softball: Weather puts Bear River in holding pattern

TAYLORSVILLE -- The Bear River softball team was stalled on deck Friday as the morning rain storm made the Valley Softball Complex fields unplayable for much of the day.

The Bears (23-4) will meet Spanish Fork today at 10 a.m., and could play at 2:30 p.m. with a victory. A loss would put the Bears in a situation of needing to win as many as three more games today to make it back to the state 3-A championship game, now set for Monday at 2 p.m. at Salt Lake Community College.

Woods Cross, Skyline softball teams clash - in the name of fighting cancer

WOODS CROSS -- This week's softball game at Woods Cross High School was unlike any other played during their softball season.

This time, the school's varsity softball team wasn't just fighting to win; they were fighting for others to live.

The girls have become painfully aware of the stark realities of life, as their former head coach has had to undergo weekly chemotherapy treatments to keep his bone marrow cancer at bay. But that doesn't stop 49-year-old Steve Drott from participating in something he loves.

"When we beat Roy (4-0) the first time (March 29 at Brigham City), we realized we had a good team and we can do whatever we set our mind to," said Box Elder junior right-hander Baylee Reeves.
