Son of Pioneers to meet today

OGDEN — The Ogden Pioneer Chapter Sons of the Utah Pioneers is meeting at noon today at Comfort Suites Inn, 2250 S. 1200 West.

Rock art is topic for Sons of Pioneers meeting in Layton

LAYTON — Native American rock art will be the topic at the Sons of Utah Pioneers meeting Tuesday.

The meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. at the Davis County Library Central Branch auditorium, 155 N. Wasatch Drive.

The speaker will be Laurel Casjens, former specialist with the Utah Office of Museum Services, said Stephen G. Handy, spokesman for the Snow Horse Chapter of the Sons of Utah Pioneers.

Casjens received her PhD from Harvard University and has extensive experience in Native American culture and art, Handy said.

N. Davis SUP to meet today

LAYTON -- The Winter Quarters Coal Mine disaster, in which 200 lives were lost, will be the topic of the monthly Snow Horse Chapter, Sons of Utah Pioneers meeting.

Ferrel E. Carter

Ferrel E. Carter, born Oct. 14, 1915, in Spanish Fork, died Saturday, March 3, 2012, at home from natural causes. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 8, at the Weber Heights Stake Center, 1401 Country Hills Drive, Ogden. Friends may visit family from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd., and from 9:45 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Thursday at the church. Interment, Lindquist’s Washington Heights Memorial Park, 4500 Washington Blvd. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the LDS Temple Assistance Fund. Sons of Pioneers to discuss massacre

LAYTON -- The Bear River Massacre will be a topic of conversation at the Sons of Utah Pioneers January meeting.

William Hegsted Shurtleff, 95, died Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2011. Services will be held on 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 31, at North Ogden 20th LDS Ward, 3100 N. 575 East. Friends may visit family from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Lindquist’s North Ogden Mortuary, 2140 N. Washington Blvd., and from 9:45 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Saturday at the church. Sons of Pioneers to hear trek stories

The Ogden Pioneer Chapter Sons of the Utah Pioneers is meeting at noon Monday at Comfort Suites Inn, 2250 S. 1200 West. The speaker will be Jolene Spendlove Allphin, who will discuss stories from her book, “Tell My Story Too.”

Allphin is the daughter of Clifton and LeOra Isom Spendlove of Hurricane. She grew up in California, Alaska and Utah is married to Judge Michael G. Allphin.

Movie-maker plans address to SUP

The Ogden Pioneer Chapter Sons of the Utah Pioneers will meet at 6 p.m. Friday at Comfort Suites Inn, 2250 S. 1200 West. The speaker will be T. C. Christensen, who will discuss the making of his movie.

SUP meeting topic is Utah sugar beets

LAYTON -- The state's sugar beet industry will be the topic presented at this month's Sons of Utah Pioneers meeting, 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Davis County Central Branch Library in Layton, 155 N. Wasatch Drive.

Presenters will discuss Utah's sugar beet industry from pioneer times to 1900, said Stephen G. Handy, spokesman for the Sons of Utah Pioneers Snow Horse Chapter group.

Catholic academy played role in Ogden

OGDEN — The Sacred Heart Academy has been gone for 50 years, but it lives still in the memories of fomer students who wanted others to know of the contributions the school made in the early days of Ogden.

In 1878, seven Catholic Sisters who were members of Holy Cross Ministries established the Sacred Heart Academy on 26th Street and Washington Boulevard in Ogden. Over the years, many residents attended music classes and kindergarten at the academy.

By 1883 there were 200 students attending the academy. By 1889 the school had outgrown itself and a new one was built on 25th Street. The school accommodated 600 boarding students and 21 sisters.

Ogden SUP group to meet Monday

OGDEN -- The Ogden Pioneer Chapter Sons of the Utah Pioneers will meet at noon Monday at Comfort Suites Inn, 2250 S. 1200 West.

Speakers will be Claire Fisher and Raymond Hobbs, who will discuss 20th -- and 21st -- century pioneers.

Suffrage movement is topic at SUP

LAYTON -- The women's suffrage movement in Utah will be the topic presented at the Tuesday meeting of Sons of Utah Pioneers.

The meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the Davis County Library Central Branch Auditorium, 155 N. Wasatch Drive. The program will be presented by Weber State University history professor Kathryn McKay.

Ogden SUP chapter to meet

The Ogden Pioneer Chapter Sons of the Utah Pioneers is meeting at noon Monday at Comfort Suites Inn, 2250 S. 1200 West.

Speaker D. Boyd Crawford will discuss his book, “The History of Ogden, Utah, in Old Post Cards.”

Crawford is an Ogden native who graduated from Ogden High School, Weber College and Utah State University. He retired from the Ogden School District after 30 years of teaching. Join the chapter for a good lunch, excellent associates and an outstanding program. Potential members are welcome: The cost of one meeting for potential members

is paid for by the chapter. For other guests, there is a $12.50 charge.

Sons of Utah Pioneers to discuss Japan

The Ogden Pioneer Chapter “Sons of the Utah Pioneers” meets at noon Monday at Comfort Suites Inn, 2250 S. 1200 West.

Speaker Elder Yoshihiko Kikuchi will discuss “The Growth of the LDS Church in Japan.” Kikuchi, a native of Japan, is a member of the First Quorum of Seventy of The Church of Jesus Christ of Later-day Saints. He was called into full-time church service Oct. 1, 1977 after serving as regional manager for Rena-Ware Distributors Co. for Japan. He is presently an assistant executive director in the Temple Department.

Potential members are welcome to attend. The cost of one meeting for potential members is paid for by the Chapter. For other guests there is a $12.50 charge.
