NFL draft preview: cornerbacks

This cornerback class features better quantity than quality. Teams will be able to find good values between the third and seventh rounds. Morris Claiborne and Stephon Gilmore are expected to go early, and there could be a dropoff before the next corner is selected.

BROOKINGS, S.D. -- Nate Wolters scored 31 points and South Dakota State won for the 10th time in its last 12 games, defeating Southern Utah 66-56 Saturday night.

Wolters hit 10 of 16 shots from the floor and was 11 for 13 at the free-throw line. The junior guard has surpassed the 30-point mark four times this season and is averaging 21.3 points per game.

Griffan Callahan added 10 points for the Jackrabbits (19-6, 11-2 Summit).

Cougars no match for Gaels

PROVO -- Perimeter shooting was a strength for BYU earlier in the season.

Now it has become a weakness for the Cougars.

St. Mary’s experienced no such trouble knocking down shots from the outside.

It proved to be the difference for the Gaels in earning an 80-66 victory over BYU on Saturday at the Marriott Center.

St. Mary’s shot 7 of 18 from the perimeter while limiting the Cougars to just 2 of 13 from the 3-point line.

It is part of a prolonged drought from the perimeter for BYU.

Aggies overcome physical Warriors

LOGAN -- Coming out of the inbounds play, Hawaii's Zane Johnson promptly smacked Utah State point guard Brockeith Pane into the press row, causing a replay TV to take a fall and Pane to have a closer-than-anticipated meeting with the advisor of the Utah State University newspaper.

For guard Preston Medlin, it didn't matter. After all, his team's two-game losing streak, halted with a 77-72 win over Hawaii Thursday night, hurt a lot more than any pain inflicted by the Warriors.

"They're definitely as physical as anybody we've played this season," said Medlin, who led all scorers with 25 points on 13 of 14 shooting from the free-throw line. "We expected that all week. They are pretty tall and pretty wide."

Southern Utah University to discontinue baseball following 2012 season

CEDAR CITY – Southern Utah University’s intercollegiate baseball program will be discontinued following the 2012 season, it was announced Friday. The University’s Board of Trustees approved the action in its regular meeting following a recommendation by its athletic sub-committee.

The University’s pending move to the Big Sky Conference, coupled with the need to redirect resources to add men’s tennis, precipitated the decision to eliminate baseball, SUU Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Ken Beazer said. The Big Sky does not sponsor baseball but requires the addition of men’s tennis as a core sport for the 2012-13 academic year.

Gauchos no sweat for Cougars in Provo

PROVO -- Matt Carlino scored 22 points and Noah Hartsock 21 to guide BYU past UC Santa Barbara 89-75 on Thursday night.

Brandon Davies added 17 and Charles Abouo 16 for the Cougars (10-3), who won their second in a row. Carlino also had six assists.

Orlando Johnson and James Nunnally scored 22 points apiece for the Gauchos (5-5), who dropped their third straight. Jaime Serna added 12 points and Kyle Boswell 10. Johnson had a game-high nine rebounds.

Weber State women finish 29th at NCAAS

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Weber State's women's cross country team finished 29th out of 31 teams at the 2011 NCAA Division I women's cross country championship on Monday at Terre Haute, Ind.

The Wildcats were led by sophomore Amber Henry, who finished 46th overall in a time of 20:35 over the 10,000 meter course on the campus of Indiana State University.

Henry just missed earning all-America honors. The top 40 runners in the field were accorded that honor.

"Amber missed earning all-America honors by less than five seconds, but she is just a sophomore and next year she will be even better," said WSU coach Paul Pilkington. "What really excites me is that we have everyone back next year. It was good for our whole team to come here and experience what the national meet is all about. It gives them experience and knowledge about what it takes to compete at the highest level and I know this group will work hard the next 365 days to compete at that level."
