Students at Spanish language fair must 'hablo Espanol' -- or else

BOUNTIFUL — The gym at Bountiful Junior High School was transformed into something like a foreign country Tuesday, with Spanish greetings of “hola” all around.

More than 200 junior high students in Davis County put their Spanish-speaking skills to the test during the annual Spanish Fair.

Students add foreign flavor to fairy-tale skits

KAYSVILLE — Students of the Spanish and French languages put their knowledge on display Thursday morning, performing fairy-tale plays for their peers.

Fairfield Junior High students, who are in their third year of studying the languages, have been working on the foreign language fairy-tale theater for several months.

LAYTON -- Jane Eskelsen said she was surprised when she found out she had been nominated for the Utah Foreign Language Teacher of the Year award -- but she was shocked when she won.

Hispanic teens help out in new Davis schools program

News item: Census data show that a majority of the nation's children will be minorities before the decade is out.

Three decades ago, a Hispanic in Davis County was usually a migrant fieldworker and stuck out like a sore thumb.

Now there are more than 25,000 from all walks of life. The Davis School District, realizing Hispanic children will be the taxpayers and leaders of tomorrow, is working to better educate them now.

Final Spanish film screens at WSU

Weber State University finishes its Spanish film series Wednesday with a tale of ugly.

"Que Se Mueran Los Feos" (2010, unrated), which translates to "To Hell With the Ugly," is about an ugly man and woman who reunite after 20 years for one last chance at finding true love.

The free screening is at 7 p.m. in the Wildcat Theater, Weber State University, 3848 Harrison Blvd. English subtitles are provided.
