Special Olympics athletes, officers carry torch through Davis County

CLEARFIELD — Roxanne Petroff watched eagerly to catch a glimpse of her son, who was among 12 Special Olympics athletes running in Monday’s Law Enforcement Torch Run.

Petroff stood on the curb across the street from Holt Elementary School, where students shouted and gave high-fives to police officers and athletes as they ran by.

Tim Shriver: 'Mom's' voice echoes in book planning

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Special Olympics CEO Tim Shriver believes there's a certain voice that is stalling his efforts to start his planned book about Special Olympics athletes: his mother's.

Shriver plans Special Olympics book

BOSTON -- Tim Shriver, Kennedy family scion and CEO of the Special Olympics, said Tuesday he is taking some time off to write a book about the athletes he says have changed his life.

Bowlers to help Special Olympics

KAYSVILLE -- Special Olympics Utah will hold its first Hallow-bowlooza at 9 a.m. Oct. 29 at Boondocks Fun Center, 525 S. Deseret Drive.

In the fundraiser, four-person bowling teams will be teamed with a Special Olympics athlete. Prizes will be awarded for high individual score, high team score, best individual costume and best team costume.

Special Olympians tee off with pros, celebrities

FARMINGTON -- Brian Larsen's face could not contain his smile as he talked about his hole-in-one Monday afternoon.

"It curved to the left, and it barely went in," said Larsen, 37. "I just couldn't believe it."

That hole-in-one putt proved to be the difference, as Larsen and his professional golfing teammate, Todd Tanner, won first place the Special Olympics Utah Short-game Challenge. The event was part of the Utah Open, hosted this year by Oakridge Country Club, and had all of the participants smiling no matter who won.

Special Olympians team up for snow games

LIBERTY -- Beverly Williamson helped one athlete with his gloves, adjusted the top of three knit caps a second was wearing, told a third to tighten his snowshoe bindings, checked jacket zippers all around and didn't even flinch when one of the squad plucked a safety pin from one of the several cords dangling around her neck.

Up for the challenge: Special Olympic athletes gear up for Winter Games

OGDEN — Nearly 200 Special Olympic athletes will compete in the Winter Games this Saturday at Powder Mountain and North Fork park.

Athletes can compete in four events: alpine skiing, snowboarding, cross country skiing and snowshoeing. Opening ceremonies begin at 9:30 a.m. at both locations.

Cameron Costley, winter director for the games from Weber State University, said volunteers are still needed for the event.
