KAYSVILLE — As region champions for 10 consecutive years, the Davis High School debate team has a long-standing tradition of effective speaking and debating.

Last weekend, the squad proved it is among the best in the state, finishing fifth out of 20 teams at the 5-A state debate tournament at Weber State University in Ogden.

Debate team coach and Davis High School instructor LeeAnn Hyer said she honestly doesn’t know the secret to the school’s success.

Herbert to honor Francom during State of the State speech

SALT LAKE CITY — An Ogden police officer killed during a drug raid is among those Utah Gov. Gary Herbert will honor during his annual State of the State speech Wednesday night.

The family of Jared Francom will attend the speech at the Utah State Capitol and be recognized by Herbert, spokeswoman Ally Isom told The Associated Press. The governor will also honor other officers and soldiers who have been killed in the line of duty during the past year.
