Feds indict Layton man on spice charges

LAYTON — For the first time ever in Utah, a federal grand jury has handed down an indictment against a man for distributing spice, a synthetic form of marijuana, in Layton last year.

Hassan Mohammed Albadri was indicted Wednesday in Salt Lake City on six counts of possession with intent to distribute spice.

The indictment alleges Albadri committed the offenses in November 2011 at three Layton locations: 50 N. Main St., 743 N. King St. and 3025 N. 1165 East.

Feds put the squeeze on synthetic drug shipments

MINNEAPOLIS -- Federal investigators have ramped up their attack on synthetic drugs entering Minnesota and western Wisconsin, seizing more than two dozen shipments from South Carolina, Texas and Nevada, as well as several intrastate shipments, the Star Tribune has found.

The U.S. Postal Inspection Service, which conducted the seizures, isn't talking about its investigations, most of which remain active. Jeff Long, a spokesman, said only that it's the mission of the service to keep the mail safe.

'The cinnamon challenge' a dangerous game for kids

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Compared with texting while driving or hard-core drug and alcohol use, teenagers using an everyday cooking spice in a game of dare may sound like harmless child's play.

But a fad that has kids daring each other to swallow at least a spoonful of powdered or ground cinnamon without drinking water is anything but, U.S. poison control centers are warning. Because the pungent spice is so dry, the body's immediate reaction is to choke, gag and ultimately vomit.

Between Feb. 26 and Nov. 7 last year, Larsen sold the illegal synthetic marijuana and kept his proceeds in two bank accounts in the name of companies he worked for, according to information filed in 2nd District Court.

The Clinton man worked for Deep Powder Distributing in West Haven and Trigger Marketing LLC in Ogden, according to a statement filed by Special Agent Nathan Mutter of the Utah Attorney General's SECURE Strike Force.

"This is just following a national trend that has hit here," said Lt. Darin Parke with the Weber-Morgan Narcotics Strike Force.
