LOS ANGELES — Although Trevor Lewis knows all about postseason heroics after scoring two goals in a Stanley Cup-clinching victory last season, even he was a bit overwhelmed by the Los Angeles Kings’ latest spectacular playoff feat.

With three minutes left, the San Jose Sharks appeared to be cruising toward a well-deserved win. After two penalties and two dynamic power-play goals, including the winner from Lewis, the Kings were halfway to the Western Conference finals.

Three Utahns ousted in Golden Gloves quarterfinals

SALT LAKE CITY — Amateur heavyweight Jesse West, the Utah and Rocky Mountain Golden Gloves champion, dropped a decision to Texas fighter Kent Brinson in the quarterfinals of the national Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions on Thursday at the Salt Palace Convention Center.

He was the last Utah fighter in the tourney. Earlier, Utahs Isaac Aguilar (123 pounds) and Larry Gomez (152) dropped quarterfinal fights.

Fast pace expected Saturday at Ogden Marathon

OAKLAND, Calif. — Rickey Henderson bounced through the Oakland clubhouse from one player to the next, one corner to the other, with a stop at the breakfast table to greet a few more guys before moving on to meet with Daric Barton by his locker.

The high-energy Henderson helped awaken a tired group Wednesday just 11 hours after losing in extra innings to the rival Texas Rangers.

Beckham’s role after retirement to remain global

PARIS — After David Beckham’s long and distinguished football career ends on a remote plastic field in northwestern France, his life promises to be far more glamorous once he steps away from the game he loves.

Nearly 20 years after breaking into the Manchester United team, the 38-year-old former England captain won the French league title with Paris Saint-Germain this season.

But after announcing his retirement on Thursday, Beckham’s role in football will take on a new dimension worldwide.
