OGDEN -- The Ogden High Tigers are 3-0 for the first time since 1975.
The Tigers' 35-7 victory over the Standsbury Stallions (1-2) Friday night at Maurice "Rete" Conroy Field has the OHS community brimming with the excitement that comes with an early-season perfect record.
"For this school, and this program, it's huge," said OHS coach Eric Eyre. "It changes the whole tone of the school. No one will argue with that. It allows us to have pride in what we're doing and really puts us in the spotlight for something positive."
After a scoreless first quarter, the Tigers found the end zone first Friday night. With 7:33 left in the second half, Ogden quarterback Nik Allred pounded into the end zone on a 4-yard rush.
The Tigers took the 7-0 lead into the half, but not without a last-second scare. It appeared as though OHS was in the clear when Ogden's Darius Scott intercepted a last-second hail mary. Scott, however, fumbled the ball after a short return. Ogden was then called for a personal foul after the whistle and the Stallions ended up with the ball on the Ogden 22 with four seconds left in the half. Fortunately for the Tigers, Stansbury's final play was unsuccessful.
"I thought we came out a little bit flat," said Eyre, who coached in his first game of the season after being suspended for the first two games.
Allred, who entered the game with the second most passing yards in the state, threw for 142 yards and three touchdowns before leaving the game in the fourth quarter. Shawn Muniz had two touchdown receptions, while Eric Porter added the other.
The Ogden special teams had a number of solid kick and punt returns that resulted in solid field position throughout the game. Alfonso Perea highlighted the special teams' effort with an 80-yard kick return for a touchdown following Stansbury's only touchdown, early in the fourth quarter.
