HYRUM -- The opening night of Region 5 play turned out to be a great night to be a Mustangs fan.The Mountain Crest Mustangs earned a great win in a hard-fought battle with the Lakers from Bonneville High School, 16-6, on homecoming night.The game matched two of the top teams from the region, and both played like they deserved to be on top at the end of the night."The Lakers came into the game very well prepared defensively and had us on our heels the entire game," Mustangs coach Mark Wootton said, "We had to run the ball straight at them because their ends were giving us trouble." It was the Lakers who struck first as they found the end zone on a 32-yard touchdown pass from Boston Nelson to his receiver Sage Stireman. It would be the only score of the first quarter and the last for the Lakers as well.The Mustangs answered back with 16 unanswered points for the win, which did not come easy. Mustangs senior running back Alex Knowles scored on a 40-yard run midway through the quarter to tie the score at six at the half.The Mustangs came out at the start of the second half and moved the ball down field but had to settle for a 42-yard field goal by Justin Call to give the lead of 9-6.It was the Mustangs defense that kept the game close and ultimately put the game out of reach as Mallin Brough picked off a pass by the Lakers' Nelson and returned it 65 yards for a touchdown to ice the game.4SKY VIEW 48, BOX ELDER 6: At Smithfield, the Bobcats claimed the first eight scores in a rout over the Bees.Sky View's Kyler Carlsen tossed five touchdown passes, taking advantage of the Box Elder defense all evening.Jackson Loveday pumped in two touchdown rushes for the Bobcats, while Mitch Parrish hooked up with Carson Mund for Box Elder's lone score.
