Syracuse pummels struggling Roy

SYRACUSE -- The Syracuse Titans continued to roll in region play, coming up with their second straight homecoming victory Friday night, a 42-0 thrashing of the winless Roy Royals.

"We came into tonight's game wanting to work on all facets of the game -- offense, defense and special teams," Syracuse coach Russ Jones said. "Roy is a good team that played hard and hit us hard. We knew that we needed to establish the run and we needed to match their intensity which we did. Our defense played really well tonight and that is a tribute to our coaches like Dayne (Faerber), Eric (Jones) and the others on our staff."

Roy took the opening kickoff, but Syracuse held them to negative yards on the drive and ended up with the ball in great field position. Four plays later, the Titans were up 7-0 on a 16-yard touchdown run from quarterback Tanner Russell. They added to that lead on their next possession when Kayden Davies rushed straight up the middle from 20 yards out to make the score 14-0 just seconds into the second quarter.

Backup running back Jarrel Fox was also able to find the end zone in the second quarter after another three and out for a 21-0 lead and the Titans were able to add two more scores before the quarter was out.

Russell was able to hook up with wideouts Taylor Russell and Dillon Cadwell on scoring strikes from nine and six yards out to take a 35-0 halftime lead.

With a continuous running clock in the second half, Fox added a second rushing touchdown and Syracuse was able to keep the Royals' offense out of the end zone for the rest of the game to keep pace in the region for second place and a first-round home playoff game.

The Titans defense was the story of the game, allowing minus-1 yard of offense in the first half and just 24 yards for the entire game. Russell led the offense, going 10-of-15 for 152 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for another score.

-VIEWMONT 23 BOUNTIFUL 21: At Bountiful High, Brave kicker Spencer Mohlman booted the game-winning field goal in the fourth quarter to hand Bountiful the cross-town victory.

The non-league loss drops Viewmont to 3-3 overall.
